Job Summary

PEMEX Deer Park is hiring a 1st Class Machinist for its Central Shop. This is an opportunity to join a skilled Shop team supporting a complex refinery on the Houston Ship Channel. The successful candidate will contribute directly to the facility’s safe operation and reliability.

The Central Shop is responsible for the tear down, inspection, and repair of the facility’s rotating equipment. The Shop has a strong focus on centrifugal pumps, but other types of equipment worked on include screw pumps, positive displacement and diaphragm pumps, turbines, compressors, fans and various other machinery. All repairs are completed to PEMEX Deer Park Standards and industry best practices.

This position includes both shop work and field work within the refinery, as well as call outs and weekend work when necessary. The normal shift is 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities:  

In the Shop

The successful candidate will have an extensive machining background in a shop environment. They will have or be able to obtain:

• proficiency with all shop machinery and associated safe operating practices, including manual mills and lathes, horizontal boring mills, surface grinders, radial drills, balance machines, saws, cutters, impact wrenches, various hand tools, and others
• the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
• the ability to measure, calculate, and/or verify dimensions, runouts, and tolerances, including the use of both micrometers, calipers and various other measuring tools.
• knowledge of the proper methods and sequences to machine components and features such as wear rings, pump cases/heads/covers, impeller trims, sleeves, shafts, threads, keyways, grinding parts flat/parallel, etc.
• the ability to perform basic lifting and hoisting activities as a crane operator, rigger, and/or signal person using jib and overhead cranes

In addition to machining activities, a competitive candidate will have experience with the tear down, inspection, repair, and rebuilding of rotating equipment. This includes using both hand and powered tools to:

• Disassemble equipment and components
• Measure and document as-found/as-left dimensions and runouts
• Remove and install sleeve and antifriction bearings
• Remove and install mechanical seals
• Replace soft goods

For both machining and equipment repair work activities, the successful candidate will be expected to gain an understanding of and be able to apply PEMEX Deer Park machinery repair standards and industry best practices to deliver high-quality repairs that support the reliability of the refinery.

In the Field

In addition to work activities in the Shop, the successful candidate may be required to participate in field work activities within the refinery. These activities may include lubricating, troubleshooting, removing, repairing, installing, and aligning rotating equipment or associated auxiliaries. Field work is executed under the Permit to Work process, often as part of a team alongside other Maintenance craftsmen and Operations personnel. Field work also often involves working behind energy isolation, including both process isolation and electrical isolation (e.g. Lock-Out, Tag-Out/LOTO).

Qualifications:

Required:

• Must possess a current driver’s license
• Must have or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
• Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis without requiring sponsorship
• Must maintain adherence to the company’s drug-free work environment and related policies, including pre-employment and random drug screenings
• Must be able to work with a team in a union environment
• Must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers verbally and/or through written means
• Must possess strong organizational skills
• Must be willing and able to work drafted overtime, including same-day overtime assignments, as required.

Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Education and Experience:

• Minimum of 10 years demonstrated machinist experience in a plant or machine shop environment
• Proficiency with manual machining equipment, precision measurement tools, and safe shop work practices

Preferred:

• Experience with the teardown, inspection, repair, and rebuild of rotating equipment
• Experience with the repair of ANSI and/or API pumps
• Experience with installation, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical seals
• Experience working in a refinery, petrochemical plant, or similar industrial environment

Physical requirements:

• Able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection
• Able to work at heights and walk on high elevation grating
• Able to climb ladders and stairs
• Able to work in hot, cold, and/or inclement weather
• Able to work in and/or around noisy areas and equipment
• Able to stand, bend, kneel, and work in awkward positions
• Able to perform duties in confined spaces and outdoors when required
• Flexibility to occasionally work extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or holidays to support plant maintenance activities
