As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), you'll teach students with ocular and cortical vision impairments, helping them navigate their school day successfully. Required Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to organize and present written and verbal information about students Ability to organize the learning environment of students Ability to work as a transdisciplinary team member Ability to manage students’ behavior Ability to plan and implement student instruction Job Requirements Master’s degree preferred Three years’ teaching experience as TVI preferred PA teaching certification Teacher of the Visually Impaired Experience with administering vision assessments and educational strategies for students with ocular vision impairments and those with cortical vision impairments Most tasks require oral communication, visual and hearing perception, and the ability to get around the classrooms, cafeteria, gym, campus, etc. Supervise students during emergency drills, play periods and community-based instruction The ability to keep up with running children and/or to lift, position or assist with lifting students is essential to perform this task The essential functions of the job described require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, kneeling crouching and brisk walking, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and material of moderate weight (40 pounds) Ability to use the strategies of Comprehensive Crisis Management and Ukeru to physically support students for their safety and the safety of others Current Act 34, 114 and 151 clearances Pre-employment medical examination, including a tuberculosis test required Job Responsibilities Conduct Functional Vision Assessments and Learning Media Assessments; produce written reports and maintain progress data Interpret medical eye reports to determine educational implications and recommend additional evaluations (e.g. low vision, assistive technology) Use the CVI Range and other CVI-specific tools to assess students with Cortical Visual Impairment Provide instruction in Braille, tactile graphics, large print, screen readers, and accessibility tools Develop, maintain and monitor present education levels, goals, objectives, success criteria, and specially designed instruction for students’ IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) Contribute to IEP meetings by providing expertise on visual impairment, learning media needs, and accommodations Collaborate with teachers, families, therapists, and O&M specialists to support student access and independence Ensure timely provision of accessible materials and assist with environmental modifications Participate in Education Center activities Other duties as assigned Job Benefits Qualifying employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program Ongoing professional development through continued education opportunities, training, and direct staff support.
