The Work You Will Do Highway Maintenance Tech II / District Four/Director of Operations / District Maintenance / West Palm Beach Maintenance – Field Support This position will assist with maintaining records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists. Operates vehicles and a variety of medium and heavy equipment. Performs preventative maintenance and pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment operated. Performs manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges and other highway facilities while utilizing a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools. Your Specific Responsibilities Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment. Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision. Assists in maintaining a chemical herbicide program along highway rights-of-way. Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge Of Typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques Skills In Operating a variety of hand and power tools Operating and performing pre-trip inspections/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating Ability To Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions Operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms Stand for an extended period of time Operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment. Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis Lift, carry and handle up to 50 pounds Other Job-Related Requirements Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. Possess a valid Class \"E\" driver’s license and obtain a Class \"B\" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class \"B\" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. Minimum Qualifications A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment. Requirements three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed. In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11. Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the #J-18808-Ljbffr State of Florida
