POSITION SUMMARY:

The Server Administrator, under the direction of the Network Manager, is responsible for the design, configuration, monitoring and support of all data, application, file and cloud servers utilized across tribal government, gaming & hospitality, health and enterprises. Collaborates and coordinates server management efforts with the assistance of other IT team members and after-hours IT support. Works closely with all other teams to create the most cost efficient and productive use of server resources and determining current and future strategy for all applications, storage and compute requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Administer, maintain, monitor, and optimize the organization’s server infrastructure across a large multi-site environment, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability of physical, virtual, and cloud-based systems.  This includes after hours and on call duties as necessary.
  • Perform server installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, migrations, and troubleshooting of hardware, software, storage, and operating system issues to maintain secure and stable operations.
  • Implement and support virtualization technologies, including VMware vSphere/vCenter and Hyper-V, to improve resource utilization, scalability, and server provisioning efficiency.
  • Manage enterprise storage solutions, including SAN, NAS, cloud, and hybrid storage environments, ensuring efficient data access, storage allocation, backup integration, and long-term capacity planning.
  • Monitor server and storage performance metrics, analyze resource utilization trends, and recommend infrastructure improvements to support organizational growth and operational needs.
  • Automate routine administrative and maintenance tasks to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
  • Collaborate with network, Active Directory, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure secure connectivity, access management, application compatibility, and seamless integration of server resources across the enterprise environment.
  • Implement and maintain security controls, including authentication, permissions, encryption, patch management, and compliance with organizational policies and industry standards.
  • Support cloud-hosted infrastructure and services within one or more cloud platforms, including performance optimization, storage integration, scalability planning, and cost management.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, backup strategy management, and business continuity efforts to ensure the recoverability and resilience of critical systems and data.
  • Communicate planned maintenance activities, outages, and infrastructure changes to stakeholders while minimizing operational disruption.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation related to server configurations, storage architecture, operational procedures, and troubleshooting processes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following

  • Stay updated on emerging server technologies, storage solutions, and cloud computing trends.
  • Assist with user onboarding and offboarding processes, managing their access to file server resources. 

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, Board of Directors, customers and outside vendors/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position heavy with lifting of 100 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of color vision, typing; frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, use of hearing, driving, bending; occasional pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, manual handling, use of smell, near/midrange/far vision and field of vision. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, wet/humidity, noise and air quality. Potential hazards include constant computer use and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals and equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems Management, Computer Science or similar degree required or five years of experience network or server administration may be considered in lieu of education.

Experience: No additional experience required.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must undergo a Criminal background investigation done under the rules of the National Indian Gaming Commission. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requires strong knowledge of enterprise server operating systems, including installation, configuration, performance optimization, troubleshooting, patch management, and security best practices. Experience administering physical, virtual, and cloud-based server environments is required. Knowledge of enterprise storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, and cloud storage solutions, and their integration within server environments for efficient data access, storage management, and backup operations required. Experience analyzing storage utilization, implementing storage solutions, and managing disk quotas and permissions preferred. Working knowledge of virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere/vCenter and Hyper-V required, including server provisioning, resource allocation, infrastructure scaling, and performance optimization. Experience supporting cloud-hosted infrastructure within one or more cloud platforms preferred. Working knowledge of network protocols, infrastructure connectivity, Active Directory, and Microsoft Entra required to support secure authentication, access management, and overall server performance. Understanding of enterprise application support requirements and the interaction between applications, storage, and server infrastructure required. Ability to troubleshoot server-related application issues and coordinate with technical teams to resolve complex problems preferred. Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, data protection practices, access control management, encryption, and industry compliance standards relevant to enterprise server administration required. Must possess strong analytical, organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a 24/7/365 operational environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required, including the ability to collaborate effectively with IT teams, vendors, leadership, and end users. Ability to create and maintain accurate technical documentation related to server configurations, operational procedures, troubleshooting processes, and infrastructure standards required. Must demonstrate adaptability to evolving technologies, changing operational priorities, and emerging cybersecurity threats.
