Position: Forestry Technician/Sawyer

Supervisor: Erik Snow, Supervisory Forester

Position type: Seasonal, full-time hourly

The Forestry Technician/Sawyer is a crucial part of the Montana Forest Consultants team, performing field operations including pre-commercial thinning, hazard tree removal, prescribed fire, and forestry project support. This role ensures the smooth operation of field/operations support processes, supports field projects and company leadership, and fosters a positive working environment.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

The duties and expectations described reflect some key responsibilities for this role. All employees are expected to complete tasks in a professional and time efficient manner. Other duties may be assigned based on the needs of the organization at any time. 

Forest Thinning Operations (90% of workload)

  • Conduct non-commercial hand thinning projects including hand saw work and piling of woody material.
  • Perform hazard tree removal near forest roads and trails.
  • Prescribed fire support including burning hand piles and broadcast burns.

Other duties (10% of workload)

Project Support

  • Assist in forest management operations, including marking trees and boundaries, ensuring adherence to prescriptions, and checking on operations.
  • Provide support for the establishment of seedlings, including monitoring and caring for young trees.
  • Collaborate with contractors to collect GPS tracks of completed work.
  • Upload GPS data (.kml) to predetermined locations for integration into GIS.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Collect, organize, and collate data on completed work by contractors.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting through appropriate platforms.
  • Maintain detailed records of GPS locations, tracks, and other relevant data.

Tools and Equipment

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of various field tools, including chainsaws, drip torches, hand tools, diameter tape, compass, inclinometer, increment borer, and GPS devices.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, training, or education in natural resources or a related field.
  • Strong desire to learn and grow within a natural resources profession.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and apply knowledge in a dynamic work environment.
  • Maintain a valid chainsaw certification, 1st aid/CPR, and other company training and certification requirements.
  • Maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to spend long periods of time (up to 90%) on your feet traveling through challenging terrain and working in varying weather conditions.
