Job Description

Under the direction of the Vivarium Manager, the Animal Technician performs duties related to the daily care of animals, working with different species of animals and aquatic organisms as assignments dictate.

Duties:

• Maintain proper levels of food and water for all animals
• Observes animals daily and records census
• Report injuries or illness of animals to the Vivarium Manager or Consulting Veterinarian
• Perform minor medical treatment of animals when needed
• Changeout and sanitize animal bedding, cages, water bottles and related items.
• Operate cage washer and sterilizer as required
• Perform miscellaneous housekeeping, sanitize animal rooms, floors and support areas
• Light maintenance/troubleshooting of equipment
• Monitor water quality in aquaria and maintenance of aquarium systems
• Provide occasional technical assistance such as restraint, ear tagging, and injections.
• Training will be provided.
• Perform emergency euthanasia

Qualifications:

• Previous animal care and handling experience required.
• Must be willing to work with a variety of laboratory animals including rodents, birds, aquatic species, and invertebrates.

Note that strong scents are not permitted in the vivarium, including colognes, deodorants, perfumes, smoking, vaping, etc.

• Ability to lift 50 lbs
• Willing to work shared weekends and holiday duties.
• High school diploma (college degree preferred)
• AALAS Certified Technician (ALAT) certification required within 3 months of eligibility. Guidance for this will be provided and the College will cover the cost of the certification exam (one-time cost).

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer's sponsorship now or in the future

This position has been classified as essential personnel. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency conditions that require the College to close, you are expected to report to work if you are scheduled to work that day, in accordance with Article 8.1.f of the Independent Service and Maintenance Union contract.

Position Details:

The Animal Care Technician position (28 hours per week, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM with alternating holiday and weekend coverage carries a standard full pay rate of $40.95 per hour.

All newly hired candidates start at 80% of the full hourly rate ($32.76 per hour). The probationary period spans 120 calendar days or extends until required AALAS/ALAT certification is successfully obtained. Wage progression adjusts as follows: employees move to 90% of the full rate ($36.86 per hour) at 120 days provided certification has been earned (or once earned thereafter), and reach 100% of the full rate ($40.95 per hour) at their one-year employment anniversary provided certification has been obtained. Candidates must pass the AALAS/ALAT certification within three (3) months of meeting eligibility requirements in order to continue working at the College. Wellesley College will cover the cost of the certification examination for only one (1) attempt, but the employee may retake the test at their own expense.
