About the Job General Summary of Position: Responsible for decontamination cleaning processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices. May act as preceptor to new associates. Responsibilities Assemble with 100% accuracy all instrument trays, sets, kits, and packs according to the prescribed manner using content lists or set recipe as a guide. Wrap packages and handle them according to the standard procedure. Scan trays/sets one at a time to avoid potential problems. Carefully inventory each tray/set according to the recipe or content lists. Validate containers/wrapped items to ensure all trays are properly prepared by initialing the load card/tape. Confirm filters, locks, indicators, count sheets, and valve plates are in place. Mark items with identifying data and distribute or store in designated area. Consult with supervisor, team leader, or designee when parts cannot be replaced or when equipment is deficient in the work area. Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Comply with governmental and accreditation regulations. Disassemble and clean equipment such as suction machines, IV poles, monitors, and pumps using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps, and cleaners (if applicable). Reassemble equipment after cleaning and test for proper functioning. Send all inoperable equipment to the appropriate holding area for pick up or repair. Dispense products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assign priority to emergency requests and issue them to the requesting department according to department-established procedure. Scan all items/products as appropriate prior to issuing to the department. Enforce/complete the SPD forms for documentation or tracking purposes. Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment at all times. Follow routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining the equipment as recommended by the manufacturer. Maintain a safe work environment by following cleaning standards and applying aseptic techniques. Maintain and clean the shelves and work areas at end of each shift. Apply aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Perform general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, and all storage areas. Maintain certification to enhance professional growth and development. Participate in educational programs, in-service meetings, and workshops. Perform visual inspections of inventory to maintain adequate stock and supply levels. Assist in maintaining appropriate inventory levels of stock. Assist in requisitioning/ordering departmental supplies. Participate in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required. Participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Participate in the orientation of new associates to each work assignment area and to overall departmental operation. Provide feedback on the progress of new associates/students on a regular basis. Perform biological and chemical monitoring. Perform tests at the beginning of the shift or as needed. Record results in the appropriate log. Visibly inspect sterilizers (Sterrad V-Pro and steam) and report concerns to the Team Leader or Supervisor/Manager. Perform other duties as assigned. Process all contaminated instruments, supplies, and equipment returned to the decontam area. Check proper operation of cart washers, U/S washers, washer/decontaminators, dryers, and dumbwaiter daily and report malfunctions. Receive all completed case carts and process trays promptly. Prioritize trays that need turnover with appropriate communication with the team leader or designee. Receive/process loaner trays following standing procedures. Manually clean power tools, scopes, lenses, and other delicate instruments. Maintain inventory of supplies in the decontam area or notify appropriate personnel. Maintain a clean and orderly area at all times within shift. Perform leak tests on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfection according to established procedure. Perform water tests and record them daily if applicable. Perform routine cleaning of washers/decontaminators as scheduled (daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly). Sterilize instruments, equipment, utensils, and supplies using various types of sterilizers according to regulatory and manufacturer instructions. Properly load sterilizers in the prescribed manner and set controls to the specified time and temperature. Complete appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization. Read marks and initials on autoclave printouts to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provide records for inspection. Inspect items sterilized prior to sending/receiving to the appropriate department or area to ensure integrity of wrapped items and sterilization. Clean the sterilizer strainer and rinse under running water until debris are removed daily and at least every shift or as needed. Minimal Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required or equivalent. Experience 1-2 years; 2 years sterile processing technician experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications CRCST - Certified and Registered Central Service Technician certification required. CSPDT - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician certification required. Must maintain annual continuing education credits to maintain certification status. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques, infection control requirements; basic knowledge of medical/surgical procedures and terminology.
