About the role

A Youth Coach at Climb Nittany helps deliver programming to young climbers throughout the gym. They will instruct climbers of all ability and experience levels, ages 3-18, through classes, clubs, camps, and teams. This role combines strong communication skills, appropriate attitude, and a focus on mentorship as we develop our youth participants. At Climb Nittany, we want our youth programs to create a safe space for kids where they feel supported, empowered, and engaged.

Success in this role requires an understanding of climbing techniques, safety protocols, and equipment use. It also requires patience and a willingness to adapt based on different scenarios and coaching techniques. 

What you’ll do as Youth Coach

• Climbing Instruction
  • Lead and assist curriculum-based programming instruction 
  • Supervise top-rope, lead, and bouldering sessions
  • Coordinate age-appropriate games and activities
  • Teach various climbing skills and techniques 
• Program Planning and Execution
  • Collaborate with co-coaches and the Youth Programming Coordinator on schedule and class layout
  • Effectively adjust class plans based on different ratios and ages
• Safety and Risk Management
  • Clearly communicate facility rules and information to participants
  • Stay current on industry standards and best practices
  • Effectively navigate, monitor, and document day-to-day incidents and accidents
• Engagement and Mentorship
  • Support personal growth
  • Encourage healthy goal setting
  • Interact professionally with parents
  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere

Qualifications

Required

• Weekend and evening availability 
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work well in a busy, sometimes loud environment
• Comfortable standing for long periods of time, performing physical labor and sometimes working at height
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Current or ability to obtain, prior to working with minors, all required Pennsylvania clearances and certifications, including SafeSport and Pennsylvania Mandated Reporter Training.

Preferred

• 18 years of age or older
• 1+ year of working with youth
• 1+ year of customer service experience
• Experience with climbing or active lifestyle environments
• Experience working within a team

Additional Information

This is a part-time hourly position with an expected compensation range of $14-18 per hour, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills. This role includes:

• Flexible overall schedule aligned with the needs of a community-based climbing gym. Evening and weekend availability required for classes, competitions, and special events.

About Climb Nittany

Climb Nittany is a 12,000 sq. ft., full-service indoor climbing gym located in Boalsburg, PA, and featuring 10,000 sq. ft. of climbing wall space for bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing. Since opening in 2020, Climb Nittany has become critical to the Centre County and surrounding community as more than just a place to climb. It has served as a welcoming gathering place for people of all ages and abilities to challenge themselves, build confidence, form lasting connections, and discover a lifelong passion for climbing.

Following a period of closure, Climb Nittany will reopen in Fall 2026 under new local ownership.
