Phlebotomist

Job Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other patient specimens accurately, safely, and efficiently while providing exceptional customer service. This role ensures specimen integrity by following established procedures for patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, processing, and handling.

The Phlebotomist supports the Frederick Health Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Customer Service Philosophy. This position also adheres to the Frederick Health Compliance Program, including all regulatory requirements and the Frederick Health Standards of Behavior.

Essential Functions

• Collect blood, urine, and culture specimens according to physician orders while ensuring specimen integrity and patient safety.
• Follow established standard operating procedures for positive patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, processing, and transport.
• Provide courteous, compassionate, and professional service to patients while maintaining a customer-focused approach.
• In the outpatient setting, register patients by entering demographic information and laboratory test orders into the electronic medical record.
• Review laboratory orders for accuracy and resolve ambiguous or unusual test requests by consulting with appropriate medical or laboratory personnel.
• If assigned to perform bleeding time procedures, meet the qualifications and responsibilities for moderate complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA (42 CFR §493.1423 and §493.1425).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrate the ability to assess and respond appropriately to age-specific patient needs while providing safe, compassionate care.
• Maintain knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and laboratory safety standards.
• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Possess a working knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
• Maintain accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills while working in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of a 13-week phlebotomy training program or a three-month military phlebotomy course preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required in accordance with site policy for new hires.
• Certification from an accredited or approved phlebotomy program preferred.
• Current valid driver's license required for all positions except those assigned exclusively to inpatient areas.
• Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.

Must demonstrate and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care and communication for patients in the following age groups:

• ☒ Infant (31 days–12 months)
• ☒ Child (13 months–12 years)
• ☒ Adolescent (13–17 years)
• ☒ Adult (18–65 years)
• ☒ Geriatric (66+ years)

Physical Demands

Sedentary to Light Work – Requires lifting up to 15 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes). Although work is primarily performed while sitting, regular walking and standing are required throughout the workday.

Ergonomic Risk Factors

Repetitive Motion: Repeating the same motion over extended periods places stress on muscles and tendons. Risk depends on the frequency, speed, force required, and muscle groups involved.

Working Conditions

• Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Risk: Category A – Will have exposure to blood or body fluids.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
