Location: Fairfield, OH

Travel: Yes, up to 50%

Overview

The HSE & Operational Training Specialist is responsible for promoting a safe, compliant, and highly skilled workforce by conducting field audits, delivering operational and safety training, and ensuring employees are qualified to perform work in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

 

Working within the Operational Excellence Department, this position partners closely with the Operational Excellence Engineers to implement and sustain standardized work practices. The Specialist is responsible for training employees on Operational Work Instructions, evaluating field execution, identifying opportunities for improvement, and reinforcing a culture of safety and operational excellence.

 

The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable safety professional with strong instructional skills, field experience, and the ability to coach employees while maintaining high standards for compliance and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

Field Audits & Operational Compliance

• Conduct scheduled and unscheduled field audits to verify compliance with company Operational Work Instructions, HSE policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Observe field activities to identify unsafe behaviors, procedural deviations, and opportunities for operational improvement.
• Document audit findings, recommend corrective actions, and follow up to ensure timely resolution.
• Partner with supervisors and project managers to improve operational consistency and safe work practices.
• Participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development when requested.

Operational Training

• Deliver instructor-led training on Operational Work Instructions co-developed by the Operational Excellence Engineer.
• Ensure employees understand the technical requirements, hazards, critical steps, and expected quality standards associated with each work instruction.
• Evaluate employee competency through written assessments, practical demonstrations, and field observations.
• Maintain training records and qualification documentation.
• Provide coaching and refresher training as procedures evolve.

Equipment Qualification Training

• Conduct classroom and hands-on operator training for powered industrial equipment, including:
• • Forklifts
  • Aerial Work Platforms (MEWPs)
  • Telehandlers (as applicable)
  • Other company-authorized mobile equipment
• Perform operator evaluations and practical competency assessments.
• Ensure operator certifications remain current and compliant with OSHA and company requirements.
• Maintain equipment training records and qualification databases.

 

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training

• Deliver Lockout/Tagout training for Authorized, Affected, and Other Employees.
• Ensure employees understand hazardous energy control procedures and equipment-specific isolation methods.
• Assist departments in developing and reviewing equipment-specific LOTO procedures.
• Conduct periodic observations and compliance reviews of LOTO practices.

New Employee Orientation

• Conduct HSE and Operational Excellence orientation for new employees.
• Introduce company safety expectations, policies, reporting procedures, emergency response, and operational standards.
• Coordinate required onboarding training and ensure completion prior to assignment of field responsibilities.
• Support onboarding efforts with supervisors and department managers.

NFPA 70E & Electrical Safety

• Deliver NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Awareness and Qualified Person training, as applicable.
• Ensure employees understand electrical hazards, approach boundaries, arc flash hazards, PPE requirements, and safe work practices.
• Support periodic review of electrical safety procedures and documentation.
• Assist with implementation of electrical safety improvements throughout the organization.

Continuous Improvement

• Provide feedback to the Operational Excellence Engineer regarding improvements to work instructions and training materials.
• Identify recurring procedural issues observed during field audits and recommend revisions to documentation.
• Support development of new training programs and competency assessments.
• Promote continuous improvement through employee engagement and coaching.

Qualifications

Required

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology, Engineering Technology, Education, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in HSE, field operations, industrial training, or construction safety.
• Experience delivering classroom and hands-on technical training.
• Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and industrial safety practices.
• Excellent communication, coaching, and presentation skills.
• Ability to travel to project sites and conduct field observations.

· Due to design parameters of fall protection equipment, the combined weight of prospective employee, required PPE, and gear shall not exceed 310 lbs. Required PPE and gear may weigh up to 40 lbs.

Preferred

• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction certification.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), or equivalent certification.
• Authorized Forklift Trainer and MEWP (Aerial Lift) Trainer experience.
• NFPA 70E Qualified Instructor or demonstrated experience delivering electrical safety training.
• Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and electronic training records.
• First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification.
• Experience in heavy equipment, cranes, lifting systems, wind energy, manufacturing, or industrial construction.
