Position Function: The College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University invites applications for a clinical track faculty position in Farm Animal Internal Medicine and Surgery at the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor, Associate Clinical Professor, or Full Clinical Professor. This position is designed to support the college's mission in clinical service, teaching, outreach, and advancement of food animal medicine and surgery. Salary Grade : UC Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department. Area of Specialization: Farm Animal Internal Medicine and Surgery Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical service in the farm animal hospital, including in-house case management involving cattle, small ruminants, and other farm animal species. The case load consists of approximately 50% beef cattle and 30% small ruminants, with some dairy cattle, swine, and camelid cases. Clinical responsibilities will include case management, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, herd health consultation, and participation in the emergency in-hospital call schedule. Clinical service responsibilities will be shared collaboratively with faculty (including two Farm Animal Internal Medicine Specialists) and house officers within the Farm Animal and Theriogenology Services. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other clinical services, including Equine Medicine and Surgery, Anesthesia, Clinical Pathology, Diagnostic Imaging, and related disciplines, to support patient care, teaching, and clinical service activities. The position is expected to have a primary emphasis on clinical service (65-75%) and didactic and clinical teaching. Participation in continuing education, outreach, and collaborative clinical research activities is encouraged.
Teaching responsibilities will include clinical instruction of professional veterinary students, veterinary technology students, interns, and residents. Participation in didactic instruction in farm animal medicine and related disciplines is expected. The college is recognized for its strong clinical training program, with veterinary students participating extensively in hands-on clinical education throughout the curriculum. Teaching activities may include participation in programs associated with the Center for Rural Veterinary Practice, which promotes rural veterinary medicine through student recruitment, rural practice exposure, and support of veterinarians serving rural communities. A new farm animal hospital and outpatient cattle handling facility, currently under construction, will further enhance clinical teaching opportunities by improved support of inpatient and haul-in outpatient services. Minimum Qualifications: A DVM or equivalent veterinary degree and eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of Mississippi , as well as possession of a valid driver's license.
Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience, either in academia or clinical practice. Assistant Clinical Professor: Approximately 0-6 years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training and has potential to develop scholarly achievements, research production, and/or teaching experiences. Associate Clinical Professor: Approximately 5-10 years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training and has demonstrated a sustained record of independent accomplishment in clinical service, teaching, and scholarly activity. Clinical Professor: Approximately 10+ years of practice after residency or equivalent advanced training and has demonstrated sustained excellence and leadership in clinical service, teaching, scholarship, and professional service. Preferred Qualifications: Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, or American Board of Veterinary Practitioners is preferred, but residency-trained individuals eligible for final certification examination, will also be considered. An advanced degree and experience in clinical research are desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students. Working Conditions and Physical Effort Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.The position requires the ability to perform physical activity associated with farm animal handling and clinical care.
