Custodian PositionThis position is responsible for performing routine cleaning and semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks. The work involves responsibility for the condition of a public building or an assigned section of a building. This position differs from Head Custodian by performing more hands-on work. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Head Custodian or other higher level staff member. General supervision may be exercised over lower level staff such as Custodial Assistants and Cleaners. Does related work as required.Compensation/Pay Range: $18.89/hr. (negotiable based on experience)Essential Functions:Sweeps, mops, washes, dusts and performs other cleaning dutiesVacuums and shampoos carpets and stuffed furnitureEmpties waste containers and disposes of rubbishReplaces light bulbs, towels, soap and other suppliesOperates floor and carpet cleaning/scrubbing equipmentRepairs furniturePerforms minor carpentry, mechanical and related tasksMakes minor repairs of plumbing and electrical fixtures and related equipmentChecks to ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked in readiness for all activitiesChecks the operation of heating systemsCuts grass, trims shrubbery, rakes leaves, shovels snow, and generally maintains groundsEnsures buildings are secure and utilizes electronic security systemsAssists in unloading, moving, handling and delivery of equipment, furniture and suppliesMaintains building recycling programPaints rooms and equipmentMaintains swimming poolsCleans and polishes busesAdditional Duties:Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programsPerforms other related tasks as assigned by supervisorEquipment Uses cleaning equipment including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, and hand tools.Safety Requirements Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties. Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks. Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.Travel Requirements Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office, may be required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; good knowledge of building surfaces and their proper care; working knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices involved in building maintenance; ability to operate floor cleaning and lawn mowing equipment; ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs and perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to comprehend appropriate bathroom sanitation processes; ability to read and comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets, Product Safety Data Sheets, and Safety Data Sheets; ability to perform at a steady pace; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards Works in standard office and school building environments. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.Qualifications Profile: Completion of eighth grade plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in building cleaning work. This is a COMPETITIVE position under Monroe County Civil Service. To be eligible to apply for this position, applicants must meet one of the three criteria listed below: Currently possess the Monroe County Civil Service Title of Custodian; have held the Monroe County Civil Service Title of Custodian within the last four years, or appear on the current list of eligibles for the title of Custodian (only) as established and provided to the Gates Chili Central School District by the Monroe County Department of Human Resources and Civil Service. Unfortunately, lists of eligibles established as a result of examinations for any other title do not satisfy this requirement. or be hired as a Provisional Appointment. The qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until an appropriate eligible list can be established and a permanent appointment made.
