The department offers Fire Apparatus Engineer's a shift stipend as approved by the Board of Directors. Fire Apparatus Engineers are expected to cover one 24-hour shift per week, plus additional trainings and community events as required by the department. Under general supervision, responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property; drives, operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; assumes a lead responsibility or performs specialized functions in the implementation of public education programs, fire prevention, fire inspection, code enforcement programs, and support services programs; assumes responsibility for carrying out company officer responsibilities; and performs other related duties as assigned. Examples of Duties The duties listed below are intended only as general illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls by driving assigned automotive equipment or fire apparatus to the required location. Drives, operates and maintains various types of firefighting and suppression apparatus and equipment, including but not limited to pumping and ladder equipment and ground monitors. Performs routine and minor repairs and inspects fire apparatus and equipment. Performs in a lead capacity in the implementation of public education programs, fire prevention and code enforcement programs, field inspections, fire inspections, apparatus maintenance and other support services programs. Trains personnel in the operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment. Reports on equipment maintenance and work operations using a personal computer, or other types of office equipment. Maintains skills and knowledge in public safety and firefighting field through study of various fire related procedure manuals, applicable fire codes, and applicable courses. Inspects safety violations to determine compliance with the California Fire Code (CFC) during building inspections. Typical Qualifications Volunteers fire suppression personnel appointed to this position shall be a minimum of 21 years of at time of appointment. Education and/or Experience High School graduation or equivalent or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required. Two years of service experience as a firefighter Four years overall experience in suppression/operations License or Certification Successful completion of the requirements for the classification of firefighter. Possession of State of California Firefighter I Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of appointment. Possession of State of California Certified Driver Operator 1A and 1B. Possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or equivalent. Possess and maintain a valid National Registry and/or California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License. Possession of a valid Class A or B California Commercial Drivers License or Class C Drivers License with Firefighter Endorsement. I-300 (intermediate) highly desirable. Desirable Certifications Swift Water Awareness S-230/S-231 for out of county fire assignments as a company officer Hazmat FRA/FRO Knowledge of Principles and practices of modern fire suppression and prevention. Procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting and emergency medical response. Principles of emergency medical services, physical rescue, overhaul and salvage operations, and modern fire prevention practices enforced by the Department. Methods and techniques of handling hazardous materials. Being familiarized with fire prevention and inspection practices as identified in the California Fire Code (CFC). Principles of fire apparatus hydraulics. Operation, use, and maintenance of pump engines, fire apparatus, and fire equipment. Skills and Ability to Drive, operate, and maintain associated fire suppression and emergency response vehicles, apparatus, and equipment. Perform field calculations of hydraulics for the proper and effective operations of equipment at emergency scenes and provide effective operations of fire pumps. Prepare clear and concise reports on a variety of fire related operations. Respond to fire alarms and effectively perform various tasks in firefighting, fire prevention, fire inspection, fire suppression, rescue operations, and related activities. Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws and regulations governing firefighting. Make emergency recognition of hazardous materials problems, and institute safe operating procedures of equipment and apparatus. Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks and heavy equipment under emergency conditions. Carry out and understand specific and general instructions, both orally and in writing with minimal supervision. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, writing, and operating assigned equipment. Observe and follow safe firefighting and work practices. Operate office equipment including computers. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all levels of District staff and volunteers, community organizations, and the public. The Application/Testing process will/can include any of the following procedures Application review to determine eligibility Written Examination Practical Skills Test Oral Interview Panel Medical and Background Investigation Probationary Period Volunteers appointed to this classification shall complete a minimum of one (1) year of probation from date of appointment. Fire Apparatus Engineers shall be evaluated at the one-year mark through an appraisal process to determine their suitability and capabilities to perform the full ranges as described in this classification. A Fire Apparatus Engineers who does not successfully complete their probation period may have their probation extended or could be demoted to the position of firefighter, or appointed from outside the organization as a Fire Apparatus Engineers separated from the department. #J-18808-Ljbffr Arrowbear Lake Fire Department
