Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA)

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a highly trained professional responsible for collaborating with surgeons and the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective operations with optimal patient outcomes. This role requires extensive knowledge and skills in perioperative nursing practices and requires certification as a CNOR.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with surgeons and the healthcare team during surgical procedures.
• Perform as an RNFA during the operative phase of the perioperative experience.
• Assume duties of OR staff RN when not assigned as RNFA.
• Practice perioperative nursing with a focus on safety and patient outcomes.
• Support the healthcare team in maintaining a sterile environment during surgeries.

Qualifications

• Current RN License in New York State.
• Completion of an accredited RN First Assistant program.
• CNOR certification is required.
• Experience in robotic surgery preferred, including:
• Robotic Urology
• Robotic GYN
• Robotic Colorectal
• Robotic Surgical Oncology (e.g., Whipple procedure, gastrectomies, hernia repairs)
• Robotic Thoracic
• Robotic General Surgery (e.g., gallbladders, appendectomies)
• Two years of experience in an operating room or level 1 trauma center preferred.

Certifications

• BLS Certification from the American Heart Association is required.
• ACLS Certification from the American Heart Association preferred.

Schedule and Availability

This position requires flexibility with evening on-call responsibilities and may involve rotating holiday requirements. The RNFA will work primarily Monday to Friday with day shifts available and will not be required to work weekends or holidays unless unit needs arise.
