Dispatcher

Job Summary Provides dispatch services for assigned department. Uses a multi‑line telephone system to receive and relay information to appropriate units. Creates and logs incident reports. Responsibilities Answer incoming telephone calls on a multi‑line telephone system. Disseminate all pertinent information to appropriate persons via telephone or two‑way radio to facilitate transmission of information and/or answer questions. Contact external agencies such as paramedic, fire, ambulance, animal control and police services to handle critical incidents. Assist public via telephone and in‑person to assess situations and problems, determine appropriate response and relay accurate information to appropriate units. Prioritize incident reports and maintain an accurate log to meet Federal, State and University requirements. Input and retrieve pertinent information from a computerized database to assist University staff and the general public. Utilize and comply with proper security and radio procedures. May work closely with other dispatch centers. Patrol parking lots, checking for proper permits and issuing citations for improper parking. Assist in providing motorist services to the University community and the public such as starting cars, directing people to available parking and specific buildings on campus. Assist visitors and registered users of the campus parking system in understanding regulations and the availability of parking in different areas of the campus. Process copies of issued citations and complete forms related to work performed during shift. Direct traffic in parking lots during special events such as football, basketball, entertainment events, theatrical productions, or University‑wide events (commencement). Impound vehicles parked in tow‑away zones or that involve excessive citations in accordance with departmental procedures. Question callers to obtain sufficient information to notify responsible parties in emergency situations and conduct confidential information searches as requested. Maintain proper sense of priorities when confronted by multiple calls and think clearly in crisis situations to evaluate and pass along information efficiently. Minimum Qualifications Six months related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Ability to speak concisely and distinctly. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and work under stressful conditions. Previous computer experience. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. Potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
