Job Summary The Respiratory Care Practitioner III is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services and patient and staff education. Monitors the patient’s response to such therapies and makes recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment. Essential Functions Provide clinical instruction and/or in‑service training to department staff, other healthcare team members, and students. Support clinical learning through mentorship, clinical rounds and practice evaluation; provide leadership for the advancement of professional respiratory practice to staff in the intensive care, general care, and outpatient services. Provide feedback for coaching and performance evaluations of team members. Assist with identifying quality improvement initiatives and design programs that provide measurable outcomes; lead clinical research initiatives ensuring education, training and implementation of study design. Collect data and maintain accurate records; evaluate products and assess outcomes. Actively participate in facility councils and committees. Serve as the shift “Charge Therapist” ensuring adequate respiratory care staff coverage; assign staff to work areas, modify assignments, assist with meal coverage, field call offs and ensure staffing levels for the next shift. Assist physicians performing procedures such as bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy or invasive monitoring. Perform CPR including closed‑chest compressions and airway management techniques in accordance with the AHA ACLS protocol. Conduct therapeutic procedures to maintain patient airway, including use of endotracheal tubes, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airways, maintenance of airway humidification, aspiration of secretions, extubation, monitoring of ETT cuff pressures and document procedures. Select, assemble, monitor and evaluate mechanical ventilators for proper function and operation; correct malfunctions, ensure cleanliness and determine appropriateness for patient condition. Perform pulmonary function tests (PFT) as needed. Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students. Assess patient’s physical status through inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavior and review of existing data. Perform treatments per physician orders, explain therapy and therapeutic goals to patients; modify treatment procedures based on patient response. Determine appropriateness of prescribed therapy; recommend methods to physician to achieve therapeutic goals including IPPB, aerosol therapy, postural drainage, percussion, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers and spacers. Set up and maintain different modes of oxygen therapy to maintain adequate PaO₂ with accurate inspired oxygen levels. Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing or aerosol therapy; prepare prescribed medication, adjust machine or device to meet patient needs; document observations and respond to adverse reactions. Give postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper bronchial secretions drainage; check orders and X‑rays prior to treatment; auscultate before and after to assess clearance. Instruct patients and families in incentive spirometry, metered dose inhaler administration, postural drainage, oxygen therapy, ventilator care and home aerosol therapy. Procure sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance via patient coaching, mucolytics, aerosol therapy or endotracheal/nasopharyngeal suctioning. Evaluate normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory values. Perform arterial punctures and analysis; possess in‑depth knowledge of arterial blood gas interpretation; perform arterial line procedures, maintain sterile technique and flushing. Perform ECGs; understand electronic monitoring, lead placement and basic arrhythmias. Maintain all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. Respond to cardio‑pulmonary resuscitations and participate as required by clinical circumstances.
