Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPosition:Crew Member/Carpenter helper Program: COI Weatherization Assistance ProgramHours:Full-time Work Location: In person, 2 Rock St., Philmont, NYStatus: Non-exempt Reports to: Weatherization Program DirectorPosition Summary: The person in this position will help install energy conservation as well as health and safety measures in homes and apartments throughout Columbia County, NY. The Weatherization Assistance Program has created an industry–producing new jobs and technologies–all while helping the most vulnerable families in America. COI provides the tools and the training you will need to make a real difference in our community and our country.Essential Education & ExperienceHigh School diploma or Equivalent with six months related experience or training is preferred, OR4 years of documented related experience, OREquivalent combination of education and experience, ANDBasic knowledge or aptitude in home construction Essential skills, abilities and characteristics:Able to work independently and on a team of 2 – 3 coworkersAdd, subtract, multiply and divide units of measure, especially in utilizing a tape measure - and communicate measures verbally and in writingBasic computer knowledge and usage skillsCommunicate and relate positively with the public and the diverse population of clients servedGeneral knowledge of housing construction and vocabulary pertaining to constructionInterpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formRead and interpret documents such as work orders, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists Licenses or certifications required for this position:Valid NYS Driver’s license - employment is contingent on the applicant’s ability to be covered under COI’s automobile insurance policyOther RequirementsAnnual physical examinationFollowing an offer of employment, all candidates are subject to an individualized background checkExamples of Duties (Illustrative Only):Drive agency truck, box truck, or truck with trailer in a safe manner to assigned work sites from garage or office and returnInstall insulation in confined or small areas such as attics, crawlspaces, walls, or knee walls using blown in or batt insulation.Install weatherization work measures on site in in customer’s homesLoad and/or unload work materials to/from warehouse to/from work truck on a daily basisMaintain confidentiality regarding agency, customer & business informationMust be able to complete work assigned by following accepted safe work practices.Occasionally assist with unloading trucks loads of 30 lb. bags of cellulose insulation, windows, doors into warehouseOther duties as assigned by Weatherization Director, Crew supervisor, or Executive DirectorPerform carpentry skills including, but not limited to, installing weather-strip materials, replacing/repairing exterior doors, installing roof and gable vents, and replacing broken glass in windows. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, kneel and/or crawlUse hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and armsSpeech and hearing to communicate in person and by telephoneVision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screenRegularly required to work in confined spaces and/or dirty areas, such as crawlspaces and attics Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 poundsOccasionally lift and/or move up to 100 poundsThis job requires performing assigned job duties both indoors and outdoors in a complete range of weather conditionsThe noise level in the work environment is usually moderate Work environment also requires working in confined and/or dirty areas, such as crawlspaces and atticsMust be fit tested to wear a respirator that fits the employee’s face and making sure it provides a tight seal to help keep you protected (at COI expense)Reasonable accommodations may be provided for some physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodations.All COI staff work together to achieve individual, family, community, and agency goals.
