Description
The Clinical Nurse Lead is a clinically expert practitioner in the department served. The incumbent is responsible for the practice of nursing according to the Rules and Regulations defined in the State of Maine Nurse Practice Act, Hospital Standards of Care/Practice, policies, and procedures. The Clinical Nurse Lead works closely with the Manager of the unit to maintain clinical practice, quality of care and staff education through coordination of unit-based education, development of quality initiatives and participation with competencies and staff orientation. The Clinical Nurse Lead is responsible for the delivery of patient care to assigned patients, when necessary, and for exercising independent judgment in the delegation to and supervision of other qualified staff. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Hospital.
Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Demonstrates exemplary clinical skills at the PN III or PN IV level.
- Provides direct patient care as needed.
- Exercises independent judgment in delegating patient care to other qualified staff.
- Ensures adherence to clinical policy and consistency in practice.
- Consistently demonstrates the clinical skills necessary to provide safe patient care.
- Anticipates problems and intervenes appropriately to prevent/minimize negative patient care outcomes.
- Assists in planning and implementing evidenced based standard of care.
- Proficient with equipment, IT and unit-based resources.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively handle actual or potential emergency situations calmly and directs others in such situations.
- Coaches and mentors colleagues to advance skills and support.
- Assesses and teaches clinical competency.
- Ensures appropriate utilization of Teletracking and Patient Transport electronic systems.
- Conducts an ongoing assessment of clinical practice on the unit/department.
- Recognizes patterns/trends and refers such to the manager for follow-up as appropriate.
- Collaborates with clinical staff and other disciplines regarding the care of highly complex patients.
Performance Improvement
- Assists with coordination of all unit-based quality improvement projects.
- Works closely with the unit-based QI representatives to collect data, analyze/evaluate information, formulate recommendations and implement change that provides safe, efficient and effective patient care outcomes.
- Monitors outcomes, recognizes patterns/trends and refers such to the manager for follow-up as appropriate.
- Promotes evidenced-based practice through research and participation in development, review and revision of unit policies and procedures.
- Provides education to staff for practice improvement.
Education
- Assists with development and administration of annual educational needs assessment.
- Implements an education plan according to needs assessment through collaboration with the Professional Development Department.
- Demonstrates effective teaching/coaching skills.
- Updates and coordinates unit-based orientation to compliment division-wide orientation.
- Develops, maintains, and tracks unit-based competencies.
Professional Practice/Leadership
- Provides input into staff performance evaluations. Incumbent may perform staff evaluations as approved by Director or Vice President
- Exercises independent judgment in recommending discipline of staff to the Manager, Director, or Vice President
- Participates in interview process of new staff and provides recommendations to Manager.
- Supports/coordinates the unit-based Peer Review process. Provides peers with constructive feedback.
- Works closely with the Manager to coordinate daily staffing, scheduling and patient placement.
- Acts as a resource to all staff working in the unit/department.
- Assures staff documentation of competency and compliance and that patient charges are entered.
- Communicates effectively with all members of the healthcare team to support a healthy workplace environment.
- Maintains membership on the unit-based and Professional Practice Councils to enhance the quality of clinical practice.
- Actively participates and leads implementation of new initiatives.
- Reads and critically analyzes professional literature, shares this knowledge with peers and incorporates this information into his/her practice.
- Maintains contact hours in compliance with certification requirements.
- Assists manager by bringing forward content for staff meetings and coordinates/leads meetings as needed.
- Promotes the Professional Advancement Program.
- Takes timely and appropriate actions to resolve identified issues. Works to resolve conflict and establish a team effort to problem solving.
- Maintains staff confidentiality.
- Develops/maintains a working knowledge of budget performance ie: capital, supplies, productivity, etc.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Other Information
- Current State of Maine RN Licensure required.
- BLS certification required.
- Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
- Prior experience in a Leadership role preferred.
