Respiratory Therapist

The certified respiratory therapist assesses, treats, and monitors patients with respiratory diseases and conditions. This includes the delivery of medicated and non-medicated therapy as ordered by the provider. Additionally, therapists provide invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support for acute respiratory failure. As part of patient assessment and management, the therapist performs diagnostic test procedures. In addition, therapists assist in departmental operations by aiding quality improvement projects, equipment, and supplies. The certified therapist follows all applicable rules and regulations established by the licensure board depending on the state in which respiratory therapy is practiced.

Job Responsibilities:

• Responds to emergency situations throughout the facility, including code blue and rapid response situations.
• Responds, attends, and provides appropriate patient support in high-risk delivery situations, including the care of the compromised newborn.
• Handles airway management, including care and maintenance of endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes.
• Assesses and monitors patients on invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support, adjusting parameters as ordered to ensure optimum patient outcomes.
• Performs and/or assists with advanced specialty procedures such as endotracheal tube insertion, arterial line, and bronchoscopy.
• Performs provider prescribed medicated therapy including small volume nebulizer and meter dose inhaler, utilizing safe medication administration standards.
• Performs provider prescribed therapeutic procedures such as chest physiotherapy, oscillating positive expiratory pressure, and positive expiratory pressure.
• Provides oxygen therapy, adjusting as appropriate for patient needs and provider order.
• Completes patient assessments and provides appropriate recommendations to providers.
• Provides education on therapy, respiratory disease, and medications to patients and significant others.
• Specifically trained and competent therapists complete pulmonary function testing as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures.
• Specifically trained and competent therapists complete neurodiagnostic studies such as electroencephalograms as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures.
• Specifically trained and competent therapists complete cardiac testing such as 12-lead electrocardiogram and Holter monitoring.
• Performs arterial and capillary blood gas sampling.
• Analyzes and interprets laboratory tests such as blood gases.
• Completes and documents oximetry studies.
• Documents patient assessments, therapy, and other pertinent patient information in the medical record.
• Verbally provides pertinent patient information to others for ongoing care and shared decision-making, such as shift report and transfer to alternate levels of care.
• Educates peers and students.
• Reviews and responds to departmental communication, including email.
• Participates in situational debriefs.
• Participates in ongoing departmental and facility processes such as quality improvement, risk, and safety.
• Attends and participates in departmental meetings including monthly department meetings, huddle board, and in-services.
• Communicates with departmental leadership regarding concerns, issues, and events.
• Cleans and prepares equipment for use, such as invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilators and therapeutic gas delivery devices.
• Ensures proper functioning of departmental analyzers.
• Evaluates and communicates equipment or supply needs.

• Skilled in arterial puncture, analysis of blood for blood gases and electrolytes, oximetry monitoring and studies, medical gas administration, pulmonary function, and other diagnostic tests.
• Capable of patient assessment and airway management.

Education:

• Required Education: Associate's Degree in respiratory care
• Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in respiratory care
• Required Certifications & Licensure: Mandatory certification in respiratory therapy appropriate for facility location. Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care. BLS, ACLS, PALS (except for candidates in Pulmonary Function Testing as determined by the hiring manager). NRP (required for candidates working with the Neonatal population, not required for candidates in Pulmonary Function Testing as determined by the Client)
