Responsibilities You will use visual aids and test equipment (e.g., compression gauges, timing gauges, manometers, injector testing machines) to locate and repair worn, dirty, or maladjusted machinery components and parts. You will disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul, and modify marine machinery or equipment prior to, during, and after completion of testing to verify all components are operating at an optimum. You will troubleshoot marine machinery equipment to identify if trade material, tools, or equipment is defective, not operating properly, or not within operation specifications. You will interpret blueprints and drawings to verify the required repairs are made on marine machinery. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by the following: 1) Troubleshooting, repairing, overhauling, and installing marine engines, outboard engines and equipment on a variety of marine craft and other equipment; 2) Disassembling and making onsite repairs to marine equipment; determining the nature and extent of repairs necessary and drawing sketches to produce replacement parts; 3) Making needed repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components; 4) Reassembling and installing the equipment (engines or propulsion machinery and auxiliary). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (CONTINUED): The Marine Machinery Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, overhaul, and operation of marine diesel engines, outboard engines, and equipment found on a variety of marine craft. Work is performed at docks, marinas, or in the shop. Equipment and systems can include propulsion and power transmission machinery, generators, pumps, winches, hydraulic, and water systems found on small tugs and marine service craft. Other expected duties are maintaining shop cleanliness and organization, adhering to environmental regulations and proper HAZMAT disposal policies, and inventory of stock and repair parts. The ability to work with schematics, detailed technical manuals and publications, product specific computer diagnostic tools, specialized shop tools (such as presses, lathes, product specific engine tools, etc.), use personal protective equipment, and estimate time for work / material needs are required skills. Occasionally, the mechanic will stand in and function as a line handler for arrival and departure of vessels. Other Requirements: The following may be required: - Apply for and obtain a forklift license up to 3 (three) ton (6,000# capacity). This can be completed after employment. - Attend the CNIC Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain (SIMBBC) Course as a boat crewmember. -Become Facility Response Team (FRT) qualified. The following are required: - Comply with weekend, holiday, or over time requirements. - Obtain and maintain a security clearance. - Hold a current driver's license. -Attend and complete mandatory engine repair training that is required by some companies in order to be qualified to perform warranty work on gasoline and/or diesel engines. PHYSICAL EFFORT A. The work requires long periods of constant standing and walking on the tugboat while underway. May be required to work in cramped or awkward positions. **During emergencies, may be required to endure long periods of work without rest. B. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over three foot bulwark on a rocking tug, which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. C. Will be required to lift and move lines weighing up to **44 75 pounds. D. Must have peripheral vision and be able to distinguish between basic colors to enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. E. Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of ** gasoline & diesel engines, tugboat and ship operations. WORKING CONDITIONS A. Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and inside an engine room. Repair work might be performed at docks, marinas, or in the shop. Will be subjected outdoor to hot sun, spray, rain, sleet, and ice. Incumbent will be subjected indoors to heat and noise from an operating diesel engine or various shop equipment during testing or repair phases. B. **Incumbent will be exposed to the following: 1. Industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles; 2. Possible injury from falls due to slipper footing and erratic motion; 3. Possible strains, cuts and bruises; 4. Industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss 5. Eye hazards will exist in most areas and/or in certain operations; 6. Organic growth (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) in drydocks, saltwater systems, and other areas exposed to seawater. 7. **Must be physically able to stand high temperatures in the vessel engine rooms. C. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments. E. The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation chemicals, etc. F. To ensure employee safety and health, Navy Region Northwest maintains personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective clothing, such as safety glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, life jackets, etc., and medical surveillance. As part of medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications for duty involving work with these agents. Education There is no education requirements for this position. Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
