Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic 1

Location: Nordland, WA

Position Status: This is a permanent position. Parking housing is not available.

Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic 1 independently performs a variety of responsibilities that include general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties. This position will utilize working knowledge of several related skills, such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work. This position will also install, repair, inspect, and maintain physical facilities (i.e., buildings, facilities, and grounds), machinery, and equipment within the Olympic View Area. This position is not eligible to telework, as physical in-office presence is required to perform essential functions. The Olympic View Area is recruiting an organized, energetic, and safety oriented team player to fill our Maintenance Mechanic 1 position. The Olympic View Area consists of seven park properties, including Fort Flagler, Fort Worden, Mystery Bay, Anderson Lake and Fort Townsend. The duty station for this position is at Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island. Fort Flagler is nearly 1,200 acres with many recreational opportunities and amazing views of the mountain ranges, Puget Sound and Port Townsend Bay. The Olympic View area has 22 full-time positions and 12 seasonal employees throughout the seven park properties.

The ideal candidate should have basic to moderate experience in all aspects of building maintenance and repair, along with basic knowledge in plumbing repair, electrical repair and minor construction projects. A desire to learn and improve those skill sets will be highly encouraged.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs general work in maintenance, repair, remodel, and alteration in construction and maintenance of area facilities, ground, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to park buildings and other park facilities.
  • Maintains and repairs plumbing, and sewage systems with the ability to provide minor electrical repairs.
  • Coordinates with management, other employees, volunteers, and correctional crews during maintenance and repair projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.

And:

  • Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.
  • CPR certification within first six (6) months of employment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a Parks and Recreation field.
  • Entry level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising lower-level staff.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Knowledge and experience working with various hand & power tools.

Uniform Information: All Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc. Working Conditions: Work schedule is five (5) days a week, Monday through Friday. Typical work hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Incumbent may be expected to adjust work scheduled to meet business needs and must maintain regular and reliable attendance to accommodate office and customer demands. A flexible work schedule may be considered at the incumbent's request and is subject to supervisory approval. This position may be required to travel between parks and/or statewide for meetings, training, and other field work. Travel will be necessary in all types of weather conditions and climates. Periodic overnight travel may be necessary.
