POSITION SUMMARY The MRI Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist) is responsible for performing high-quality magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in an outpatient imaging center. This position requires independent clinical judgment, technical expertise, and strong patient care skills to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient imaging services. The MRI Technologist operates MRI equipment to produce diagnostic-quality images, ensures patient safety in the magnetic environment, and works closely with the MRSO, referring providers, radiologists, nursing staff, administration and clinical staff to support accurate diagnosis and optimal patient outcomes. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Diagnostic Imaging Perform MRI examinations in accordance with physician orders and established imaging protocols Prepare patients for MRI procedures by explaining the exam, screening for contraindications, and answering questions Select appropriate imaging parameters and protocols to obtain high-quality diagnostic images Evaluate images for quality, accuracy, and completeness prior to submission for radiologist interpretation Adjust scanning parameters as needed to optimize image quality while maintaining patient safety Patient Safety & Care Conduct thorough MRI safety screenings for implants, devices, foreign bodies, and other contraindications Ensure compliance with all MRI safety zones and facility safety policies Provide patient education regarding MRI procedures, expectations, and safety considerations Monitor patients during examinations and respond to any adverse reactions or emergencies Maintain patient dignity, comfort, and privacy throughout the imaging process Adhere to infection control standards and HIPAA regulations at all times Contrast Administration (if applicable) Establish and maintain intravenous (IV) access when required Administer MRI contrast agents in accordance with physician orders and facility protocols Monitor patients for contrast reactions and respond appropriately to adverse events Document contrast administration and patient response accurately in the medical record Equipment & Quality Assurance Operate, maintain, and perform routine quality assurance checks on MRI equipment Identify and report equipment malfunctions or technical issues promptly Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and imaging quality guidelines Maintain proper documentation of imaging protocols and technical parameters Collaboration & Workflow Work closely with radiologists to ensure adherence to imaging protocols and diagnostic standards Coordinate with nursing staff, front office, and other technologists to ensure efficient patient flow Participate in departmental communication, quality improvement initiatives, and staff meetings Assist in maintaining an organized, efficient, and patient-centered imaging environment Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities Accurately document patient information, imaging studies, and procedure details in PACS and EMR systems Maintain compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and facility policies Follow radiation safety (where applicable), MRI safety, HIPAA, and infection prevention standards Participate in continuing education to maintain certification and stay current with MRI technology advancements QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Education & Certification Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Technology or related field required Current certification as a Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) required Advanced certification in MRI (ARRT (MR)) or ARMRIT preferred or required depending on facility and state regulations Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Experience Prior experience in MRI within a hospital or outpatient imaging setting preferred Experience with high-field MRI systems and multiple imaging modalities preferred Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of MRI physics, anatomy, and imaging protocols Excellent patient care, communication, and safety awareness skills Ability to perform independent clinical decision-making in a fast-paced environment Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images Proficiency with PACS, EMR, and MRI imaging systems Ability to work collaboratively with radiologists and multidisciplinary teams Commitment to patient safety, professionalism, and high-quality outcomes Key Responsibilities Perform MRI scans following established protocols and physician directives Ensure patient safety and comfort, addressing needs such as claustrophobia, language barriers, and physical limitations Position patients and select imaging parameters for optimal diagnostic quality Monitor patients during procedures and respond to any concerns Review physician orders and follow MRI protocols with precision Collaborate with radiologists and healthcare professionals to ensure quality care Evaluate images for quality and communicate findings to interpreting radiologists and referring providers Maintain accurate patient records and complete documentation per policy Process images, perform PACS, QA, manage logs and demographics Report equipment issues promptly and assist with routine maintenance Enforce magnetic field safety for patients, staff, and visitors Educate patients about procedures and ensure proper preparation Maintain confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA Manage clinical supply inventory, ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and clean Assist with patient scheduling, basic clinical care as needed, and office duties as assigned Additional Skills & Knowledge Strong understanding of cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and MRI terminology Familiarity with MRI coding systems and departmental protocols Ability to troubleshoot equipment and imaging quality issues Commitment to
