Part-Time Animal Services Kennel AttendantThe City of Turlock is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Animal Services Kennel Attendant. This individual will assist the Animal Control Officer with the day-to-day functions and maintenance of the Animal Control Facility. The Part-Time Animal Services Kennel Attendant may also assist the Animal Control Officer in the field. Only the first 75 applications submitted will be considered. Please note that the job announcement may close without prior notice.Essential FunctionsJob duties may include but are not limited to the following:Receive and dispatch complaints and concerns of the public by phone and in personAssist in the daily care and control of sheltered animalsAssist in monitoring the conditions of animals held in the shelter and of the facility itself to ensure the health and safety of the animals housed thereAssist in monitoring animal foods, equipment and suppliesIssue dog licensesInteract with the publicEuthanize and dispose of animals as appropriateRestrain confined animals using snaring equipment, leash or lead, or other means of controlling animals as deemed necessary, in accordance with proper safety proceduresAssist with the preparation and maintenance of reports and recordsOperate cash registerPerform data entry and retrievalAdminister medication to impounded animals as directed by a VeterinarianPerform other related duties as assignedAdditional duties with a valid Penal Code 832 Certificate (desirable)Tranquilize animals with a tranquilizer gun.Issue court citations relating to animal control enforcement.QualificationsThis position requires the ability to identify various breeds of dogs, cats, other domestic animals and livestock; deal effectively with the public; apply basic methods of animal collection and impoundment; provide routine care and feeding of domestic animals and perform basic computer skills and cashiering skills. Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate required. Prior experience working with animals in an animal shelter environment and/or in an animal health services environment is highly desirable.Additional InformationAn eligibility list will be established from this recruitment that will be valid for six (6) months.Experience Prior experience working with animals in an animal shelter environment and/or in an animal services environment is highly desirable. Education Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate required. License and Certification Possession of a valid California Driver's License at the time of employment, to be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Must obtain certification in Small Animal Euthanasia within six (6) months from date of employment. Once possession is received and verified, hourly rate will increase to $21.51. Desirable Certification Penal Code 832 Certificate (Arrest and Firearms) Selection Process: 1. Candidates invited to compete in the testing process maybe required to take a written examination, which is graded on a pass/fail basis. Only those applicants who pass the written examination will advance to the oral examination.6. Candidates invited to compete in an oral examination that receives a score of 70% or more will be placed on an eligibility list. Ranking on the eligibility list is based solely on the results of the oral exam.7. Completion of a practical may be conducted in order to further evaluate skills relating to essential job functions.8. Top candidates on the eligibility list will be referred to the Turlock Police Department for a Command Staff interview to determine which applicant(s) are referred for a background investigation.9. Final appointment to the position of Part-Time Animal Services Kennel Attendant will be contingent upon passing the following:Interview with ChiefBackground Investigation andMedical examination (including drug/alcohol screening, hearing and vision examinations)The City of Turlock has adopted a veteran's preference system (effective January 1, 2002). The percentage score achieved through an entrance (non-promotional) examination which ranks applicants on an eligibility list shall be adjusted to provide: (a) one (1) percentage point added to the final test score for each six (6) months of active service during a time of armed conflict, up to a maximum of five (5) points, and (b) five (5) percentage points added to the final test score for veterans who are disabled as a result of active military service during a time of armed conflict, regardless of length of service. To receive preference points, applicants must provide supporting documentation and proof of honorable discharge. In no event shall an applicant receive more than a five (5) point adjustment. This request should be made in section #12 of the employment application form. An employee who, on or after July 1, 2015, works for 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment is entitled to paid sick leave. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked. Accrual shall begin on the first day of employment or July 1, 2015, whichever is later. Paid sick leave shall carry over to the following year of employment and is capped at 80 hours or ten days. Hourly Rate of Pay: $18.44 - $21.51 per hour Hours of Work: Hours and days may vary (20 hours per week) day, weekend, and holiday availability required. This position is not to exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year.
