Graduate from an approved school of nursing with a certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse.


Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties.
This includes the execution of physician orders and operation of pill call.
Also includes operation of sick call and assisting the physician in examinations and treatments.
Performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of his/her license.
Assists in the professional management of the facility medical department.
Applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents.
Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents.
Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment.
Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Controls medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment and inventories as required by established procedures.
Performs emergency procedures as needed.
Keeps equipment and work area clean and utilizes appropriate sanitation methods.
Documents and reports activities in accordance with established policies and procedures, including medical file documentation.
Assists supervisor with evaluating the provision of all medical services to prevent duplication of those services.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents.
Securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
Assists with preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs.
Uses appropriate grammar in filing, alphabetizing, and labeling.
Reviews reports and records produced on the shifts and properly processes all reports and documents in a timely manner.
Reads, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents.
Responds to lawsuits via corporate counsel and attends court hearings when necessary.
Conducts research of charts and reviews the status of inmates/residents with serious health problems.
Communicates effectively and coherently to administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the general public.
Facilitates NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved services.
Helps prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures.
Takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
Escorts inmates/residents or coordinates their movement to and from different areas for medical treatment.
Initiates and completes investigations and inquiries with accuracy, gathering information and evidence.
Exercises independent judgment in determining when probable cause exists to recommend or take disciplinary action.
Engages in functions in confined areas, working rotating shifts and physically checking doors, windows, and other areas to verify they are secure.
Is aware that verbal abuse may be present in an antagonistic environment.
