Med/Surg Nurse

Med/Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med/Surg Nurses include:

• Consulting and coordinating with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
• Preparing and administering (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and recording prescribed medications.
• Reporting adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy.
• Educating patients on surgical procedures.
• Recording patients' medical information and vital signs.
• Monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment used on patients, and interpreting and recording electronic displays.
• Initiating corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptoms.
• Providing bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients.
• Initiating patient education plans as prescribed by a physician.
• Teaching patients and significant others how to manage their illness or injury, explaining post-treatment home care needs.
• Changing dressings, inserting catheters, and starting IVs.
• Preparing equipment and aiding physicians during examinations and treatment of patients.
• Responding to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
• Participating in discharge planning.
• Utilizing time management skills.
• Recording all care information concisely, accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
• Performing other position-related duties as assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
