Compounding Pharmacy Technician

This position is responsible for compounding under the supervision of a pharmacist. Will need to work collaboratively with other compounding pharmacy technicians to compound orders and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Using NexGen computerized compounding system, weigh and record the chemicals included in the formula and then combine the chemicals into the appropriate dosage form as requested by the prescription.
  • Responsible for the preparation of compounded sterile preparations and related activities under the direction of the pharmacist in charge (PIC).
  • Prepares compounded sterile preparations using aseptic technique and NexGen standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Assures pharmacy compliance with rules and regulations of the appropriate state board of pharmacy and other regulatory agencies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate NexGen automation equipment. Including calibration and proper documentation of scales, electronic meters, etc.
  • Ability to work well with other NexGen employees and the management team.
  • Knowledge of cleanroom functions, aseptic technique, relevant cGMP's, USP (797), and other applicable USP chapters.
  • Ability to perform quality control functions as assigned.
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures and the ability to monitor for compliance.
  • Computer literate in Windows environment and computer systems.
  • Ability to operate various types of office equipment.

Typical Working Conditions

  • Pharmacists will work in a variety of positions and locations such as sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and walking for prolonged periods of time.
  • Exposure to chemicals used in the preparation of compounds (some chemicals are classified as toxic and special safety precautions must be taken when working with these chemicals).
  • Must be able to use necessary equipment such as computers, scanners, phone/headset, or other technology devices as assigned.
  • Must be able to wear required compounding safety equipment for long periods of time when required.

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

High school diploma; meets all state requirements, which may be registration, licensure or certification. Minimum of three (3) or more years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Compounding and/or laboratory experience strongly preferred but not required.
  • Strong math skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Must exhibit excellent problem resolution skills.
  • Must be capable of wearing all protective wear as required by State Board of Pharmacy. This includes, but not limited to: mask, gloves, gown, hair net, safety goggles etc.
  • Must have knowledge of basic principles, theories and laws, policies and procedures that pertain to compounding.
  • Exhibit punctuality and low absenteeism.
