Assistant Controller

Summary

The Assistant Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations - including AP, AR, and the monthly close - across a 10+ entity structure, while serving as a key technical resource for GAAP matters, external audit, and consolidation/elimination work. This role also drives process improvement, automation, and business partnership outside of Finance, positioning the incumbent as a strong next-step candidate for Controller.

Key Responsibilities

Team & Operations Management

• Manage and develop accounting staff responsible for AP, AR, and the monthly close cycle
• Own the close calendar across all entities; review journal entries, reconciliations, and close deliverables.
• Coach and build bench strength within the accounting team.

Technical Accounting

• Apply US GAAP across revenue recognition, accruals, reserves, and other judgment areas
• Review and approve account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
• Research and document technical accounting positions as needed.

Multi-entity Consolidation

• Manage intercompany transactions, eliminations, and reconciliations across 10+ legal entities.
• Own the consolidated close and financial statement preparation.
• Maintain and improve intercompany policies, transfer pricing documentation, and elimination workpapers.
• Support entity-level and consolidated audits.

Process Improvement & Automation

• Map current-state accounting processes across entities, identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and control gaps.
• Evaluate, select, and implement tools/technology to automate manual work, with particular attention to leveraging Quantum's capabilities (inventory, AP/AR workflows, reporting) more fully.
• Drive standardization of close processes and chart of accounts across entities.

Business Partnership

• Partner with Operations, Sales, Program Management, or other functions outside Finance to support decision-making.
• Translate financial data into actionable insight for non-finance stakeholders.

Reporting

• Support preparation of monthly/quarterly management reporting packages, including entity-level and consolidated views.
• Assist with variance analysis and commentary for leadership.

External Audit

• Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors during interim and year-end fieldwork.
• Prepare/review audit schedules (PBC lists) at both entity and consolidated levels.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required
• 7-10+ years progressive accounting experience, including supervisory experience
• Experience managing accounting staff across AP, AR, and close functions
• Solid working knowledge of US GAAP
• Demonstrated success in process mapping/improvement
• Track record identifying automation opportunities and implementing tools/systems
• Experience partnering with non-finance departments
• Exposure to management reporting
• Experience working directly with external audit firms
• Multi-entity accounting experience, including intercompany eliminations and consolidations (10+ entities strongly preferred)

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Qualifications

• CPA or CPA-track strongly preferred. Aerospace & Defense experience.Inventory accounting experience (standard costing, cycle counts, E&O reserves) - Quantum experience specifically is a significant plus. Experience coordinating with external tax consultants. Sales and use tax / property tax filing experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to sit 6 to 8 hours a day. Must be able to work with their hands, arms and be extremely accurate. Must be able to walk, sit, or stand on a regular basis. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

Customary physical demands for an office environment. While performing the duties of this job in the production area, the employee may be regularly exposed to moving high-speed machinery and mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to machine oils, metal fillings, acetone, paints, solvents, grease, cutting fluids, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock or vibration when on the production floor. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud when on the production floor.
