Summary This position is located within the Office of Security and Preparedness (OSP), Field Operations Division, VA Police Service. - Performs alarm and access monitoring; traces access patterns; programs; assigns or removes user permissions; updates databases; remotely opens and secures doors during routine and emergency operations; and generates a variety of reports as needed.
- Assesses on-scene behavior and determines when it is appropriate to dispatch law enforcement or other personnel to investigate.
- Responsible for responding to alarm systems monitoring fire, access, intrusion, duress/panic, medical emergencies, psychiatric emergencies, medical assist teams, etc., and the emergency digital paging system.
- Maintains radio/alarm activity records/logs to include dates, times, results of communications and activities, and prepares completed reports.
- Implements policies, procedures, and methods for identifying and protecting information, personnel, property, facilities, operations, or material.
- Operates an established vehicle registration and visitor management program and parking registration and/or photo identification equipment.
- Maintains accountability of Police Officer badges issued and all associated logs.
- Performs administrative (non-criminal) investigations of lost keys, passes, and PIV cards to rapidly assess and document compromised access to VA property and terminate off-access permissions.
- Receives and processes emergency calls, maintains contact with law enforcement units on assignment, maintains the status and location of Police Officers, and coordinates communication between agencies as needed.
- Coordinates with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials for the coordination of emergencies.
- Responsible for the orderly flow of communications between the police dispatch center, agency leadership, and the workforce.
- Troubleshoots systems when problems arise and resolves issues whenever possible.
- Uses the state and the National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) to access sensitive law enforcement information to support field operations and investigations.

- Physical Requirements: The work is typically sedentary in nature. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Working on off-tours, rotating shifts or regular overtime may be required. The work required does not inherently include any physical requirements essential for successful job performance that could not otherwise be performed with accommodation or workplace adjustment. A pre-placement physical examination is not required.

- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: supporting administrative activity of a law enforcement and personnel security services; receives and compiles information from various sources relating to police and emergency incidents; operates a variety of security/police communication equipment such as computers, alarm processors, security/surveillance cameras/systems, radio consoles, and tape recorders; determines response requirements and priorities of situations to dispatch units according to procedures; experience as telephone operator that handles a variety of calls requiring questioning callers to determine location and nature of issue/problem to determine type of response needed; experience with the National Crime Information Center systems; maintains access to and security of highly sensitive materials. - Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school. - Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the second year and experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level.
