Financial Controller / Higher Education
A nationally recognized University in the region is looking for a full-time Financial Controller to join their team. This role sits at the heart of the organization and plays a key role in shaping financial strategy, improving processes, and helping leadership make smart, data-driven decisions.
You’ll own the full accounting function while leading a small team and helping drive financial visibility, efficiency, and risk management across the University. You will also be responsible for Endowment Accounting, overseeing the University’s cash and asset management, while maintaining sound business practices. What You’ll Be Doing
This role blends leadership, financial strategy, and day-to-day accounting oversight. You’ll take ownership of the general ledger, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting while partnering closely with leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing general and subsidiary ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, sales tax submission and payment, and 941 review and submission
- Overseeing the annual financial statement audit, footnote development and preparation of the 990
- Hiring and supervision of various accounting and administrative staff
- Owning the full month-end and annual cash management (AP/AR) and asset management (endowment/investments) operations
- Participating in the annual budget process
- Act as Business Office liaison to specific internal and external departments
- Planning and implementing FASB accounting standard updates
- Overseeing PPE accounting and renewable/replacement cycle planning
- Handling banking function including wire/ACH transfers, fund transfers, capital calls, etc
- Conducting operating cash-on-hand analysis
- Collaborating with the Finance & Administration leadership regarding budgeting, cash management, and other financial matters
- Representing the University with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff, students, and visitors, with a professional image at all times
Core Background
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 3+ years of demonstrated Controller-level accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP policies and procedures, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
- Experience supervising exempt and non-exempt employees is preferred
- Experience in an accounting leadership capacity
- Advanced level of proficiency with Excel including Formula and Data tabs. General proficiency in Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Characteristics
- CPA certification
- Prior experience in higher education
- Experience with risk management and audit preparation
