Overview Maintenance Superintendent for SMS Mill Services, LLC in the steel mill services industry. This role supports daily operations in a steel mill scrap environment and is hands-on, focusing on safety, maintenance leadership, and equipment reliability. Responsibilities Lead and participate in maintenance and repair of heavy mobile equipment, industrial machinery, and supporting systems. Work alongside mechanics, technicians, and operations staff during equipment breakdowns, major repairs, and scheduled maintenance. Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel engine issues; oversee repairs of engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, hydraulics, electrical systems, welding, and related components. Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns and restore equipment to service safely and efficiently. Maintenance Leadership Direct, supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance employees. Assign daily work based on equipment condition, priorities, qualifications, and resources. Provide clear direction at the start of each shift and monitor completion and quality of work. Hold maintenance staff accountable for safety, attendance, productivity, workmanship, housekeeping, and policy compliance. Preventive Maintenance and Equipment Reliability Develop, implement, and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs. Ensure inspections, lubrication, and preventive maintenance tasks are on schedule. Review maintenance records to identify recurring failures and reliability concerns; identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Monitor equipment condition and recommend repairs, rebuilds, replacements, or capital improvements. Safety and Compliance Lead maintenance activities in accordance with SMS safety policies, customer requirements, OSHA regulations, and environmental standards. Conduct pre-job planning with hazard assessments, lockout/tagout procedures, permits, and PPE as required. Participate in safety meetings, audits, incident investigations, and corrective-action processes. Ensure proper storage and disposal of oils, fuels, batteries, tires, chemicals, and other materials. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. At least five years of progressively responsible experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel equipment, industrial machinery, or similar equipment. Prior experience leading mechanics, technicians, or maintenance employees. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, brakes, steering, and preventive maintenance practices. Basic computer skills, including email, work-order systems, spreadsheets, and maintenance records. Physical Requirements Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in awkward positions. Frequently use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding or cutting equipment. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently; heavier items with assistance or lifting equipment. Maintain the visual, hearing, and physical capabilities necessary to safely inspect, diagnose, and repair equipment. Work Environment This position works primarily in a steel mill, scrap-processing, heavy-industrial, or outdoor material-handling environment and may involve extended exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, grease, noise, vibration, moving machinery, and other industrial hazards. Regular presence in maintenance and operating areas is required. Schedule and Availability The role requires flexibility based on operational and equipment needs, including potential early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, extended shifts, and after-hours response to critical equipment failures.
