Perform a variety of basic patient care activities under the direction of a registered nurse; report changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition to the registered nurse. Assist patients in activities of daily living by feeding, bathing, toileting and other personal hygiene regimes. Follow all departmental policies, procedures, and safety, environmental and infection control standards; participate in continuous improvement initiatives. Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy; answer questions from patients and their families and explain procedures within the scope of training/abilities; maintain confidentiality. Perform general clerical duties as required by unit needs, such as answering telephones, answering call lights, and greeting patients and visitors. Enhance personal growth through participation in workshops, educational programs, in‑service meetings and by reviewing current literature. Perform other tasks as assigned (see task list). Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Graduation from a school of practical nursing or equivalent certification program. Completion of one of the following: A Certified PCA/PCT Program A Certified Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent training. A Medical Assistant Program. An EMT program. A phlebotomy training program. Preferred: six (6) months direct patient care experience. Good analytical and observational problem‑solving skills. Mathematical ability to perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to adapt to new technologies used in the work environment. A high level of interpersonal and verbal skill and teamwork commitment to effectively function as a team member in support of all services delivered on the patient unit. Good reading, writing and comprehension skills. Physical ability to walk and stand 80–90% of work time, lift soiled linens and move equipment; assist patients in repositioning, bed‑to‑stretcher transferring, basic activities of daily living and locomotion requiring lifting heavy items. Visual acuity and manual dexterity. Ability to perform routine clerical functions such as answering telephones, taking messages and basic retrieval of computer information. Demonstrates willingness to make a meaningful contribution to the work environment through behavior and attitude.
