Scope of Position Responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant preparation and distribution of medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Provides high-quality, patient-centered technical support services to ensure accurate medication preparation, packaging, and inventory control. In collaboration with pharmacists and other pharmacy technicians, assist in maintaining regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and service excellence across assigned practice areas. Maintains active registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and fulfills all continuing education and competency requirements necessary to maintain registration throughout employment. If registered as an Ohio Board of Pharmacy Technician Trainee, completion of the OSUWMC employer-based training program is required, followed by updating registration to Registered or Certified Pharmacy Technician status with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Position Summary This position functions to support all aspects of medication preparation and distribution services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Duties include medication preparation and packaging; sterile and non-sterile compounding; inventory management; documentation; maintenance of medication storage and security standards; and other duties as permitted by Ohio Board of Pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician I assists pharmacists in ensuring accurate medication dispensing and regulatory compliance in accordance with Ohio Board of Pharmacy rules, state and federal regulations, USP standards as applicable, and institutional policies. This role supports both patient care and research protocols while promoting a safe and efficient medication-use system. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served, including completing any mandatory education requirements. Duties and Responsibilities Prepares, packages, and labels medications pursuant to a pharmacist-reviewed order in accordance with Ohio Board of Pharmacy regulations and institutional policies. Assists in the preparation of medication dosage forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, ophthalmic, topical, rectal, and investigational medications. Prepares sterile intravenous admixtures utilizing aseptic technique under pharmacist supervision, including small- and large-volume parenterals, portable infusion device cassettes, and chemotherapy agents (as permitted by role and competency). Distributes medications, supplies, and equipment in compliance with state and federal regulations. Maintains accurate documentation related to medication preparation, dispensing support activities, and inventory control. Ensures medications are stored appropriately, monitored for expiration dates, and secured according to regulatory standards. Maintains appropriate inventory levels of medications, equipment, and supplies to prevent service delays. Inspects medication storage areas under pharmacist direction to ensure compliance with standards established by The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory agencies. Maintain cleanliness and organization of medication preparation and storage areas. Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate medication distribution needs and resolve operational concerns. Participates in departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and competency validation processes as assigned by supervisors and managers. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum age: 18 years Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician and active PTCB/NHA certification. Maintain Certified Pharmacy Technician status with Ohio Board of Pharmacy and active PTCB/NHA certification. Continues to meet departmental competency requirements and pharmacy standards of employee conduct. The university will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.
