City, State or Full Address: 1515 SE Monroe St, Topeka, KS 66612

End Date: September 7, 2027

Must serve a 365-day (1 year) service term

Living Allowance: $68.39/day ($24,962.35/year)

Purpose:

Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park, an AmeriCorps Program, exists to preserve, interpret, and share the history and lasting significance of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that ended legal school segregation. The program serves communities connected to the "Brown Five" cases across Kansas, South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington, DC, engaging visitors, educators, and local partners in learning about this pivotal moment in American history. Guided by principles of historical integrity, public service, collaboration, and broad availability of educational resources, the program is committed to fostering informed dialogue, civic understanding, and meaningful community engagement.

The AmeriCorps Position supports this mission by strengthening organizational capacity through the development of outreach materials, volunteer engagement systems, and educational curricula. The member serves with park leadership and partner communities to create interpretive plans, conduct grant research, and produce curriculum and digital media that expand public access to the park's stories. This role enhances the park's ability to connect with communities and deliver impactful educational programming.

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.

Description of Duties:

The member will work on capacity building activities, such as expanding the reach of the park's current education program by researching school districts and preparing outreach plans for those districts within a two-hour drive of the park. The member will develop communication plans for staff to engage with the "Brown Five" communities to assist in their capacity building--whether that is to create new interpretive materials, such as historical research for text for signs, web pages, brochures, or tour plans. As the park is emerging into its expanded purpose and mission, the member will be a valuable contributor to projects across the breadth of the Brown v. Board of Education decisions and their legacies in American history since 1954.
