Assistant Planner

Department: Planning & Building Department Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt Effective Date : July 28, 2026 Position Summary: Responsible for providing assistance to the Planning & Building Director and Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Official. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Includes intake and processing of new submittals and coordination & issuance of permits. Review of plot plans and building submittals for tract homes to ensure compliance with the zoning ordinance and building code(s). Review and processing of Easement Encroachment requests for fences, ideally for over-the-counter permit issuance. Review and processing of sheds, accessory buildings, and electrical permits, ideally for over-the-counter permit issuance. Involves issuance of Code Enforcement letters and aids with tracking. Maintains digital and paper records for the department. Responds to the public on permitting inquiries and other minor inquiries such as zoning verification, property jurisdiction, etc. Sends ordinance violation letters to violators for items such as grass, weeds and garbage. Follows up by sending the results to the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Official or coordinates with the street dept. to mow and clean up as necessary. Tracks time for reimbursement. Organizes and notifies those who have applied for building permits that the permit is ready to be picked up and if there are fees due. Presents some cases to the Fortville Board of Zoning Appeals, Plan Commission, Redevelopment Commission, and Town Council.May need to attend up to five (5) evenings per month. Perform research and GIS work on various items for the department. Perform other duties as assigned. Desired Minimum Qualifications: Four (4) year undergraduate college degree; Ideally in City Planning or a related area; Or, five (5) years of experience in Planning, Homebuilding/Construction, Engineering, Economic Development, local government, or a related field. Ability to work on multiple projects/tasks and meet deadlines. Good planning and organizational skills. Well-developed interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. Professional appearance & communication and pleasant demeanor. Computer literacy, specifically Microsoft Office products; GIS preferred. Detail-oriented. Ability to problem solve. Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Planning & Building Director. ADA Compliance: Physical Ability: Some tasks may require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight, 15-20 pounds. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
