Substation Design Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a growing Substation Engineering team responsible for the design, development, and execution of critical power infrastructure projects. This role offers the opportunity to work on new and existing substation facilities while collaborating with engineering, construction, operations, and project management teams to deliver reliable and safe electrical systems.

The ideal candidate is a motivated engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, managing multiple projects, and working directly with field personnel and contractors to bring designs from concept through construction. Key responsibilities include:

• Design and engineer substation physical projects, including electrical layouts, grounding systems, conduit routing, foundations, and equipment arrangements.

• Develop and review engineering packages, including one-line diagrams, plans and profiles, construction drawings, and vendor-supplied documentation.

• Prepare bills of material, construction packages, work orders, and supporting project documentation.

• Coordinate procurement activities and material fabrication requirements to support project schedules.

• Manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule objectives are achieved.

• Provide technical support during project kickoff meetings, construction activities, site visits, and constructability reviews.

• Partner with contractors, operations personnel, inspectors, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.

• Monitor project progress and proactively resolve design, material, or scheduling issues.

• Support the development and implementation of engineering standards, design practices, and emerging technologies.

• Perform engineering calculations, including substation facility line ratings and related system analyses.

• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Skills and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• 2+ years of engineering experience within electric utilities, power systems, substations, transmission, distribution, or related infrastructure industries.

• Experience performing engineering calculations, technical analysis, and design work.

• Strong understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and design standards. - Experience with substation physical design and power delivery projects.

• Experience working directly with construction teams, field personnel, and engineering consultants.

• Familiarity with SAP or similar enterprise work management systems.

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

• Experience reviewing contractor and vendor drawings.
