Tanker Trailer Mechanic

This role focuses on performing preventive maintenance and repairs on fuel tanker trucks and trailers, with a strong emphasis on safety, regulatory compliance, and attention to detail. You will inspect and service tanker equipment, complete DOT inspections on trucks and tanker trailers, and ensure all work meets applicable standards. The position does not involve engine or transmission warranty work, which is handled separately, and requires a mechanic who brings their own tools, ideally in a rolling toolbox.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on fuel tanker trucks and trailers in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct DOT inspections on trucks and tanker trailers to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
• Perform maintenance and repair on components such as air compressors, fuel pumps, hubs, wheels, suspension systems, springs, and axles.
• Inspect, repair, or replace domes, valves, vents, and other tanker-related equipment as necessary to maintain safe and reliable operation.
• Diagnose mechanical issues on tanker trailers and complete repairs efficiently and accurately.
• Carry out trailer repair and diesel maintenance tasks related to tanker and cargo tanker equipment.
• Apply welding skills as needed for tanker trailer and component repair, following safety procedures.
• Use strong mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot issues with tanker systems and related components.
• Ensure all work performed supports fleet reliability and uptime while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
• Maintain and use personal tools, including a rolling toolbox, to perform daily tasks effectively.
• Document inspections, maintenance, and repairs clearly and accurately to support compliance and recordkeeping.
• Work independently as a self-starter while collaborating with shop team members as needed to support overall shop operations.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience as a tanker trailer mechanic is highly preferred; strong mechanics without tanker-specific experience may be considered.
• Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance and repair of tanker trucks and trailers.
• Experience performing DOT inspections on trucks and tanker trailers, including familiarity with DOT requirements.
• Experience with DOT 406, 407, and 412 tanker/cargo tanker equipment.
• Basic mechanic skills, including the ability to work on air compressors, fuel pumps, hubs, wheels, suspension systems, springs, and axles.
• Ability to inspect, repair, or replace domes, valves, vents, and other tanker-related equipment.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with diesel maintenance and truck systems related to tanker operations.
• Ability to perform trailer repair and maintenance safely and efficiently.
• High attention to detail and a strong service-oriented mindset.
• Capability to perform DOT-related work and adhere to HM-138 / HM138 requirements.
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time on a concrete shop floor.
• Ownership of a complete set of mechanic tools, ideally organized in a rolling toolbox.
• Ability to work independently as a self-starter and manage tasks with minimal supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• HM183 certification is highly valued and can qualify you for higher pay.
• ASE certifications are not required, and support is available to pursue ASE certifications.
• Welding skills for tanker and trailer repair.
• Experience working with diesel engines and engine-related systems (excluding warranty engine and transmission work).
• Experience in fleet maintenance environments.
• Familiarity with tanker-specific systems and components, including domes, valves, and vents.
• Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
• Flexibility to work within a range of daytime hours Monday through Friday.

Work Environment

This position is based in a shop environment where you will work on fuel tanker trucks and trailers using your own tools, ideally in a rolling toolbox for mobility and efficiency. The workday typically falls between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some flexibility in scheduling. You will spend extended periods standing on a concrete shop floor while performing mechanical, welding, and inspection tasks. The environment involves hands-on work with diesel, tanker, and trailer systems, as well as DOT 406, 407, and 412 tanker/cargo tanker equipment. Standard shop safety practices apply, and you will work around typical shop tools, equipment, and machinery in a professional maintenance setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tulsa, OK.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $30.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
