This is a unique opportunity to own and elevate the financial infrastructure of a growing mission-driven organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, you will manage day-to-day accounting operations while laying the groundwork for scalable future growth. Initially operating as a high-level individual contributor, you will play a critical dual role: driving high-level financial strategy and personally managing core processes like AP, AR, reconciliations, and payroll.

Key Responsibilities

• Accounting & Operations: Oversee general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, and expense reimbursements. Personally process core transactions while the team grows. Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual closes, maintain the chart of accounts, and ensure strict GAAP and nonprofit compliance.
• Financial Reporting & Strategy: Prepare timely financial statements, dashboards, and budget-to-actual variance reports for leadership and the Board. Partner with the CFAO on annual budgets, forecasts, and grant reporting while tracking restricted/unrestricted funds.
• Audit, Tax & Compliance: Lead the annual external audit as the primary liaison for auditors. Support Form 990 preparation and tax filings. Design, document, and maintain robust internal controls while evaluating operational workflows for risk and efficiency.
• Payroll & Systems Administration: Manage end-to-end payroll in partnership with HR. Maintain integrated financial software, including QuickBooks Online, and leverage modern automation and AI-driven tools to build scalable financial operations.

Qualifications at a Glance

• Education & License: Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance; active CPA license required.
• Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience (GL, closes, audits). Nonprofit accounting, grant tracking, and Form 990 experience required.
• Skills: Expertise in QuickBooks Online, advanced Excel, hands-on operational mindset, and an interest in emerging finance tech.

Responsibilities

Accounting & Operations

• Oversee GL, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, reimbursements, and chart of accounts in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
• Personally process AP, AR, and payroll while the organization grows.
• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual closes, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Monitor cash flow, bank accounts, credit cards, vendor invoices, and expense reports.

Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare financial reports, dashboards, and budget-to-actual variance analyses for leadership and the Board.
• Support the CFAO in annual budgeting, forecasting, and grant reporting.
• Track restricted/unrestricted funds and ensure proper expense allocations.

Compliance, Audit & Controls

• Lead the annual audit as primary liaison for external auditors; support Form 990 preparation and tax filings.
• Develop, document, and maintain internal controls and risk management practices.
• Coordinate with banking partners, payroll providers, brokers, and outside accountants.

Payroll & Systems Administration

• Manage end-to-end payroll processing and benefit reconciliations in partnership with HR.
• Maintain and optimize integrated accounting, payroll, and expense software systems.
• Implement automation, tech, and AI-enabled tools to build scalable financial workflows.
