Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Physics

Position Overview The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith invites applications for a broadly trained physicist, atmospheric scientist, geophysicist, or astrophysicist. This one‑academic‑year Visiting Instructor or Assistant Professor position will begin August 2026 and will be responsible for teaching a 15‑hour load per semester. Key Responsibilities Teach undergraduate lecture and lab courses in calculus‑ and non‑calculus‑based classical physics, and offer courses in any area of physics related to the candidate’s graduate expertise. Mentor undergraduate students. Provide instruction in physics, physical sciences, and related courses such as environmental or atmospheric science. Support the physics minor and the Geoscience and Chemistry degree programs. Participate in department, college, and university committees and service activities, including student recruitment and curriculum assessment. Attend faculty and administrative meetings, student research symposiums, commencement ceremonies, and other required events. Engage in professional development assignments and other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of a Master’s (Instructor) or Ph.D. (Assistant Professor) in physics, atmospheric science, or geophysics with at least 18 graduate‑level credit hours in physics. Teaching experience in physics and/or related subjects and evidence of undergraduate research interests are preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Superior people skills and the ability to use instructional technology effectively. Ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses and to integrate technology into the classroom. Proficiency in communicating with diverse groups in individual and team settings. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Strong undergraduate classroom instruction. Assessment and evaluation of instruction. Service to the department, college, and university, including committees and curriculum assessments. Maintain a positive work atmosphere, act as a leader, and ensure consistent on‑time attendance. Additional Job Duties and Responsibilities Attendance and participation in all faculty and administrative meetings, student research symposium, commencement ceremonies, and other meetings/events as required. Background Check Requirements Criminal background check and motor vehicle registry (MVR) check. Salary Information Visiting Instructor: Minimum $48,000 commensurate with education and experience. Visiting Assistant Professor: Minimum $53,000 commensurate with education and experience.
