Quality Inspector

The Quality Inspector ensures that precision metal components meet strict quality standards by performing detailed dimensional inspections, operating a variety of measurement instruments, and accurately documenting results. This role works closely with production teams in a clean, modern quality lab and on the shop floor to identify nonconformances, support continuous improvement, and uphold rigorous customer and internal specifications.

Responsibilities

• Use profilometers to check surface finish on metal components and accurately record results on designated forms.
• Operate microscopes, micrometers, and roundness gages to verify part dimensions and document all measurements.
• Inspect parts produced on operators' machines using a variety of gages, including air gages, concentricity gages, plug gages, dial bore gages, and drop indicators.
• Perform routine and special quality inspections and reporting tasks as needed to support production and quality initiatives.
• Report any nonconformances promptly to quality leadership and help ensure timely corrective actions.
• Interact and collaborate with production personnel and members of management to resolve quality issues and support process improvements.
• Use computer systems to create and maintain SPC charts and other quality documentation.
• Read and interpret blueprints, including dimensions and basic GD&T, to determine inspection requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Work both in the quality lab and on the production floor to perform in-process and final inspections.
• Operate CMM equipment (such as ZEISS systems) when required, and support CMM-based inspections for tight-tolerance components.
• Verify that parts meet tight tolerances and customer specifications, particularly in grinding and precision machining environments.

Essential Skills

• At least two years of related quality inspection or quality assurance experience in a metals environment.
• Hands-on experience measuring precision parts using standard inspection tools.
• Proficiency with basic instrumentation, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and profilometers.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including dimensions and a basic understanding of the purpose of GD&T.
• Basic math skills sufficient for dimensional inspection and tolerance calculations.
• Computer skills, including the ability to create and interpret SPC charts.
• Experience working with inspection gages and quality tools in a production or manufacturing setting.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when recording and reviewing inspection results.
• Ability to communicate effectively with production personnel and management regarding quality issues.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of roundness gages, air gages, concentricity gages, plug gages, dial bore gages, and drop indicators.
• Experience in grinding or precision machining, particularly OD/ID grinding operations.
• CMM experience, ideally with ZEISS CMM systems and related software such as Calypso.
• Experience working with very tight tolerances on precision metal components.
• Strong understanding of GD&T symbols and their application in inspection.
• Proficiency in blueprint reading beyond basic dimensions, including complex geometric controls.
• Familiarity with common quality instrumentation used in modern quality labs.
• Bilingual communication skills.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very clean, temperature-controlled quality lab within a brand-new facility that specializes in OD/ID grinding and precision metal components. Initial training typically occurs on first shift (approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) for about two weeks when possible. Ongoing work is primarily on first or second shift, with typical options such as 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and the operation runs from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For highly skilled individuals, there is flexibility to adjust hours (for example, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), and shift preferences are considered rather than being a barrier. You will work in a dedicated quality lab and also spend time on the production floor alongside operators. The lab is equipped with advanced quality equipment, including a personal ZEISS Micura CMM machine, an individual desk, and a dedicated workstation for this role. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Arlington Heights, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
