About the Role We’re looking for a dedicated Outpatient Bariatric Dietitian to join our team and help us continue delivering the level of care our patients and families deserve. The Outpatient Bariatric Dietitian will provide supportive nutrition counseling services as part of a comprehensive bariatric surgery and weight‑loss program. The dietitian is a member of a multidisciplinary program team, evaluates patient progress over time and ensures that patients are educated and supported in making lifelong lifestyle changes while remaining well‑nourished. Responsibilities Conduct counseling sessions, evaluate nutrition status, provide medical nutrition therapy, and document nutrition assessments for adults pursuing medically managed weight loss and bariatric surgery. What You’ll Do Assessment and Implementation: Effectively use the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) to assess and re‑assess patients, identify nutrition diagnoses, and appropriate nutrition interventions with patient and family involvement, monitor and evaluate progress and revise treatment plans when indicated. Nutrition assessment findings and plans are constructed to identify potential nutrition issues and provide education regarding pre‑op and post‑op diet regimens and expectations, as well as those for medical weight loss. Evaluation: Utilize anthropometric measuring tools to assess body mass index, muscle mass, fat mass and other parameters and to monitor changes in these parameters over time. These tools may include body composition and indirect calorimetry measurement. Apply these results to address concerns based on the unique needs of each patient. Outcomes are reported through the Bariatric Surgery Program database. Communication: Educate patients, families and/or caregivers on nutrition recommendations in individual and group settings. Individualize information to meet the needs of each person. Utilize approved, evidence‑based education materials that are not branded and from reliable sources. Evaluate, update and develop patient education materials as needed. Use patient education tools to effectively provide patient care. Education: Document individualized plans of nutrition care for all patients, ensuring that all regulations and standards of nutrition practice are met. Plans include collaborative goal‑setting using SMART goals and effective counseling strategies. Regular assessment of progress toward goals is documented. Follow timelines for documentation completion as outlined in department policy. Communicate with Director of Bariatric Surgery, Advanced Practice Providers, and fellow staff regarding plans of care. Resources: Incorporate evidence‑based practice and best practice standards into daily work. Explore learning opportunities in areas of information and research in weight loss and bariatric surgery. Complete continuing professional education according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Professional Learning Plan to stay abreast of developments. Community: Be an active and engaged member of the interdisciplinary team of the Saratoga Hospital Bariatric Surgery and Weight‑Loss Program. Recognized as the nutrition expert, regularly collaborate with practice colleagues to effectively coordinate patient care and support patient long‑term success. Responsible for training new dietitians with support from the practice and clinical nutrition managers. What You Bring Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics or Foods & Nutrition. Advanced degree in related field (Nutrition, Public Health, Business Administration) preferred. At least three years’ experience in outpatient nutrition setting working with individuals and groups. Previous experience working with bariatric surgery patients strongly preferred, but not required. Registration with The Commission on Dietetic Registration (RD) required. Certification as a Dietitian‑Nutritionist (CDN) with New York State Department of Education required. Membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and Weight Management Practice Group strongly preferred. It is expected that membership in both would be obtained within 6 months of hire if not a member at time of hire. Certificate of Completion in Adult Weight Management Training Program through AND or other advanced training in weight management strongly recommended.
