Pharmacy Manager - Pharmacy - Full-Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt)

Position Overview Under general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Services, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager manages the clinical pharmacy program, developing, monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating clinical pharmacy services that promote desirable patient outcomes. Responsibilities Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assist with problem identification and resolution, cost containment issues, implementation of new clinical programs and protocols, and attainment of performance measures, including attending committee meetings. Manage formulary and protocol development, policies, procedures, medication evaluation, and standardization of medical care for the department, including peer review of pharmacy dosing protocols. Supervise clinical activities and train pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students. Oversee orientation, instruction, training, and supervision of pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy students. Plan and participate in pharmacists’ professional development. Provide in-service educational programs concerning the therapeutic aspects of patient care to pharmacists and other health professionals. Update pharmacy staff on the development and implementation of pharmacy‑specific policies and procedures as well as hospital policies that affect the pharmacy department. Manage non‑formulary drug requests and participate in Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee activities. Establish productive, collaborative relationships with medical‑center staff, other hospital departments, and strategic business‑unit leaders to promote cooperation and efficiency in providing and meeting patients’ pharmaceutical‑care needs. Develop and implement new clinical pharmacy services and assure continuity of ongoing clinical pharmacy programs; plan and conduct clinical pharmacy services integrated with the department’s distributive requirements. Mentor all pharmacists in a standard approach to patient monitoring and problem solving. Monitor pharmacists’ activities regarding utilization surveillance and clinical activities and provide instruction or education as required. Assist physicians with drug selection and therapeutic regimens, furnishing drug information to ensure appropriate drug therapy. Coordinate and implement educational training and competency programs for pharmacists and pharmacy residents. Develop communication systems to respond to problems or emergency requests from patient‑care units. Conduct and/or review inspections of medication‑use areas on a regular basis. Understand and improve the department’s revenue cycle. Keep administration regularly informed of departmental activities and problems. Identify and act upon cost avoidance in drug therapy by promoting cost‑effective regimens, drugs, and reducing waste; develop and utilize evaluation methods for determining patient‑care impact and cost‑effectiveness of clinical and distributive pharmacy services; conduct target‑drug programs and drug‑usage evaluations as needed and report results to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. Develop and implement system changes in response to adverse drug events, findings from medication‑use‑evaluation literature reports, and occurrence reports; participate in departmental quality‑assurance programs. Facilitate the development, implementation, and maintenance of the clinical pharmacy program, including treatment protocols, formulary changes, and clinical pathways. Maintain and improve medication‑distribution systems. Assure appropriate drug utilization by interacting with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, patients, and others, providing drug‑therapy data collection, problem solving, drug information, and making sound recommendations. Develop and monitor hospital policies and procedures regarding medication utilization in collaboration with medical staff and the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee; coordinate and participate in development of the hospital’s formulary and related Pharmacy & Therapeutics activities. Monitor drug therapy using patient profiles and medical‑record documents for accuracy, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, contraindications, allergies, and sensitivities in assigned patient‑care areas. Support the Director by contributing to the development of operational systems and procedures for the Pharmacy Department’s Clinical Division, in accordance with the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and state hospital codes. Manage the review, tracking, and compilation of data regarding adverse drug events. Establish and maintain policies and procedures for safe compounding of sterile and non‑sterile products. Establish and maintain policies and procedures for the security of controlled substances. Maintain effective control of inventory and minimize the incidence of lost patient charges.
