HVAC-R / FS Specialist

Responsible for assisting the HVAC-R / FS Supervisor in the management of the department including absentee coverage. Work as a knowledge source for all department members.

Work Months: 12

Education: High School or equivalent (GED) and a 2-year degree in an HVAC or Food Service field

Trade Licenses: HVAC-3 Technician (Refrigerant systems, under 20 Tons) HVAC-2 Technician (Refrigerant systems, unlimited tonnage) HVAC-1 Technician (Boiler and Chiller systems) Commercial Refrigeration (Commercial Freezers & Chillers) Plumbing Technician (related to food service equipment) School Maintenance Electrical (for service equipment)

Knowledge: A) Be able to read and interpret Blue-Print Specifications for HVAC and related fields B) Be able to use a Computer & basic web based sites (work-order system/EnergyCAP) C) Be able to use word processing and spreadsheet software (i.e. Word & Excel)

Basic Skills: Possess and maintain a valid NC Driver's License

• Have a driving record sufficient to gain approval by the Board of Education (BOE) insurance carrier to operate BOE motor vehicles at will (no DUI, and no more than one ticket in a 5 year period)
• Have a clean criminal background for at least 10 years (longer for some charges / some charges are permanent disqualification from employment). No pending cases

Responsibilities: 1) Perform day to day maintenance as needed on HVAC and Food Service Equipment 2) Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HVAC, Food Service, and Energy related codes 3) Manage Work Order System for HVAC-R / FS Equipment 4) Assist with trouble shooting all HVAC & Food Service Equipment operation as needed 5) Supervise the replacement of HVAC & Food Service Equipment 6) Work with HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing departments to eliminate system issues 7) Provide sizing guidance on all new and replacement equipment 8) Train Mechanics to learn systems sufficient to pass the state code exams 9) Train Apprenticeship Program Candidates

10) Work well with other school system employees 11) Complete safety training classes as required by the department 12) Be available 24/7 for On-Call Personnel to ask questions issues
