Substation Engineer Cary, NC – Temp to Perm hire Job Description: Bachelor’s Degree Minimum Years of Experience: 6+ years 69kV – 500kV Projects Greenfield and Brownfield projects across East Coast and Texas Open to relocation candidates Contract to Hire – Looking to Hire ASAP Responsibilities Work with the project team through the design and construction process, adapting engineering plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs. Support substation projects from the conceptual phase through completion. Prepare and develop substation design packages, including physical arrangement above and below grade, protective relaying and control, electrical studies such as grounding and lightning analysis, and lighting and security. Develop substation calculations, including insulation, AC station service, DC systems and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill. Produce design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bill of materials, and other required deliverables. Apply intermediate knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other industry and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures. Support field inspections for substation facilities on public and private utility systems. Research and compile project-related data as required by the project managers. Support client presentations, reports, and visualizations to demonstrate technical results and project status. Identify, communicate, and support resolution of issues on projects as needed. Work with the project manager to support the project schedule and meet deadlines. Ensure deliverables and services meet the client’s satisfaction and internal QA/QC guidelines. Perform design quality reviews. Meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel to develop relationships with key client contacts. Support the preparation of proposals and client presentations during the proposal process. Perform other duties as assigned. Comply with all policies and standards. Requirements Candidate may exceed listed years of experience; overqualified candidates will receive an adjusted title and level. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related ABET‑accredited program, or a related Technology degree with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Minimum 3 years of substation engineering experience; consulting experience preferred. Experience with physical design or protection and control (P&C) for key technical roles. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership skills. Capability to apply diversified engineering knowledge to broad assignments. Ability to devise new approaches to encountered problems. Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Legal authorization to work permanently in the country where the position is located.
