Health Careers- Workforce Development Non-Credit Instructor- Adjunct (Medical Coder/Auditor) Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads for 50 years, growing from one campus into a regional educational and economic force. The college provides higher education and workforce services through four campuses, seven regional centers, and cultural institutions, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024‑25. Founded in 1968 as part of the Virginia Community College System, TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The adjunct faculty member is responsible for teaching courses in which he or she has specific training or competence. Plans, organizes, teaches, and provides feedback to students to promote and direct student learning in either a classroom, remote via Zoom, or online environment for students with a wide variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Engages students outside of class via office hours and provides thorough, timely, and effective feedback regarding mastery of course and program learning outcomes. Tidewater Community College’s Workforce Solutions Department seeks an experienced Medical Coder/Auditor to lead a hands‑on Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) exam‑preparation course. This adjunct‑instructor position is part of the college’s non‑credit program under Workforce Solutions. The program offers continuing education for professional development and industry‑recognized credential attainment, with courses delivered asynchronously or at TCC campuses and other convenient community locations. The CPMA instructor will prepare students to audit medical records and ensure coding accuracy and compliance, emphasizing healthcare regulations, documentation review, and revenue integrity. The instructor will deliver engaging CPMA‑focused instruction using real‑world coding scenarios, chart reviews, and denial analysis. Functional Responsibilities Create a learning environment that facilitates students’ acquisition of knowledge and skills in the discipline or program. Align course activities with student learning outcomes, employ a variety of active‑learning strategies to foster engagement, use appropriate technology and supporting materials, and provide prompt, meaningful feedback on assignments, communicating with students in a timely and respectful manner. Deliver instruction in support of stated learning outcomes; adhere to college policies for student surveys; conduct timely assessments of student learning, including at least one assessment within the first 15% of class; and analyze prior semester evaluations to develop and implement action plans as needed. Work during day, evening, and/or weekend hours as determined by assigned courses. Hold at least one office hour per week for each assigned course. Qualifications and Core Skills Demonstrated competency in a relevant health‑care or professional services field. Strong technological skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources. Hold an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) CPC certification. Ability to design and implement lesson plans that align learning objectives with student outcomes. Ability to develop and adapt teaching and learning strategies to accommodate the diversity of community‑college students and promote acquisition and application of knowledge. Strong knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM, CPT/HCPCS, documentation guidelines, and payer requirements. Familiarity with CPMA exam content and formats. Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills. Proficiency with LMS and basic coding software. Ability to communicate effectively in electronic formats. Additional Considerations Minimum 5 years of hands‑on medical coding and auditing/medical record review experience. Teaching experience at the college level. Knowledge of CANVAS or other learning management systems. Knowledge of and experience with proven teaching strategies that promote student success. Advanced degree or related certifications. Candidate should possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources.
