Responsibilities

The Phlebotomy Supervisor will:

• Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties
• Possess adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory
• Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients
• Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens
• Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories
• Stock and order routine supplies
• Maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas
• Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures
• Perform annual staff performance evaluations
• Provide staff training and orientation
• Evaluate and ensure staff competency
• Ensure staff compliance with all regulatory requirements
• Develop and maintain policies and procedures appropriate to the department
• Ensure staff compliance with all laboratory and hospital policies
• Provide for a safe work environment in evaluating and implementing PPE and other safety phlebotomy devices
• Actively participate in the collection and evaluation of QA data for the development of Performance Improvement initiatives
• May assist to pick up samples at hospital/OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Training:

1. Current and valid state Certification as a Laboratory assistant required.

2. Blood-gas assistant and point of care test analyst qualifications preferred.

3. Minimum 3 years clinical laboratory experience required.

4. Minimum 1 year previous leadership experience required.

5. OSHA/DOT/IATA certification for diagnostic specimen packaging and shipping one time every 3 years and maintain updated preferred.
