Payroll & Benefits Specialist

John H. Carter Company, Inc.

Summary

This position’s key responsibilities include administering regular payrolls for salaried employees and facilitating adherence to the payroll budget. The role also oversees 401(k) plan operations and compliance audits and enters employees’ 401k changes into the HRIS.

Additional duties include support for recruiting processes (e.g., offer letter review), compliance reporting (FCRA, EEO-1), workers’ compensation case management and audits, and maintaining accurate payroll and benefit records. The position requires a high level of attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure, and consistent, reliable attendance.

This position requires a steady work habit at all times. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain focused on work with multiple interruptions daily. In addition, this position can be demanding in terms of time management, knowledge, skills, and commitment to complete tasks daily. This position requires sound decisions and discretion to protect confidential information. The individual must behave and be able to interact with customers, vendors, and employees at all levels within the organization in a professional, business-like manner, while treating all such individuals with dignity and respect.

Essential Duties

Payroll Responsibilities:

  • Processes regular payrolls for salaried employees
  • Processes monthly and quarterly payroll items
  • Handles certified payrolls
  • Ensures 401k deferrals and loan deductions are withheld
  • Prepares files for dead inventory, generic earnings and additional payroll processing
  • Facilitates Payroll Budget Process
  • LA Tax incentive and other specific town/parish incentives

Benefit Responsibilities:

  • Administers the day-to-day and annual operations of the 401(k) plan
  • Responsible for preparation of Form 5500 for the 401(k) and cafeteria plans

Other Responsibilities:

  • Review and approval of offer letters for recruiting department
  • FCRA – Fair Credit Reporting Act
  • EEO-1 reporting
  • Reports, maintains and monitors all workers’ compensation case files
  • Responsible for annual workers' compensation audit
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential for this position.

Education and/or Work Experience -

  • 3 to 4 years of payroll processing experience required
  • Strong accounting aptitude required
  • 1 to 2 years of employee benefit experience preferred
  • High School or Equivalent
