Staff Engineer (Backend & Data)

About the Role Trial Library is an AI-native research platform that expands access to precision medicine. We are hiring a Staff Engineer to own key parts of our backend and data platform. Your focus will be on architectural leadership during a shift from narrow data pulls to automated EMR integrations and on building AI agents that empower human experts. Your Responsibilities Own reliability, evolution, and scale of core workflows. Design for compute-intensive, long-running pipelines; choose async pipelines, message queues, container compute. Monitor production, triage issues, and maintain pulse on clinician, coordinator, and partner experience. Decide on AI model usage and operationalize “token economics” as the platform grows. Mentor engineers and set development standards that evolve with AI tooling. Your Qualifications 8+ years of backend depth with staff‑scope impact. Deep AWS experience (Lambda, Fargate, SQS, RDS) and service‑job match judgment. Proven use of AI coding tools to build production systems. Autonomous ownership: identify and resolve systemic issues independently. Startup experience building from scratch and treating ambiguity as opportunity. Strong systems thinking: backend architecture, APIs, databases, and scalability. Clear communication and influence to explain trade‑offs to engineers and non‑engineers. Healthcare alignment with interest in clinical trial access and health equity; HIPAA experience is a strong plus. Nice to Have Experience with data and analytics platforms (warehouses, ETL, reporting). Familiarity with IaC (Terraform, Pulumi), EHR/EMR standards (HL7/FHIR), and API design patterns.
