Acute Care RN-Surgical Registered Nurse

Job Overview As a Registered Nurse at MercyOne, you will provide and direct safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. Through evidence‑based practice, you will utilize critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate outcome‑based care. The Acute Care RN manages a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, including post‑operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients. You will supervise and coordinate care provided by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing team members, facilitate communication with physicians, patients and families, and interdisciplinary team members, and uphold MercyOne’s performance expectations and core values. Essential Functions Conduct initial assessment to gather data; make an assessment of new admissions within 30 minutes of patient arrival, complete all areas of the admission assessment database within 24 hours. Identify patient problems and develop outcome/goal‑based plans of care; incorporate medical history, analyze assessment data, determine appropriate nursing interventions, prioritize patient care needs, and make referrals to support services and education. Implement the outcome/goal‑based plan of care; assign and coordinate patient care, delegate tasks to team members, coordinate with Case Manager, Social Worker, and other disciplines, assist in discharge planning, and document instructions. Evaluate patient progress and revise the plan as needed; assess responses, modify interventions, and update problem lists and goals. Communicate relevant clinical information to the team; report progress and changes to physicians, other team members, and during shift‑change handoffs; maintain comprehensive documentation. Demonstrate clinical competence; use nursing policies and procedures, ensure medication safety, document accurately, and maintain communication with management and staffing regarding admissions and unit needs. Manage telemetry and cardiac monitoring when applicable; interpret cardiac rhythms, respond to arrhythmias, assist with data collection and quality improvement initiatives, and provide education to nursing staff. Provide age‑appropriate care in accordance with growth and development principles; collect, analyze, and apply age‑specific data and communicate appropriately. Adhere to all safety, infection control, and health policies; use personal protective equipment, follow emergency procedures, and maintain a safe work environment. Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and organizational integrity programs; ensure ethical and professional behavior. Schedule PRN schedule. Nurses self‑schedule to accumulate 208 hours annually, including twelve weekend shifts and two holidays (one winter, one summer). The unit operates on rotating shifts. Minimum Qualifications Associate degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Current Iowa RN license. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required. American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if the unit has telemetry monitoring capabilities. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire. High language skills, intermediate to high math, and high critical thinking ability. Basic computer skills required.
