Public Safety Telecommunicator

Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center is looking for individuals who can stay focused, communicate clearly, and help people during emergency and non-emergency situations.

As a Public Safety Telecommunicator, you will receive and process calls for service, gather critical information, and coordinate emergency response with law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services.

This role may be a good fit if you communicate well under pressure, can quickly gather and process information, provide strong customer service, and remain focused while managing multiple priorities.

No prior 9-1-1 experience is required. Training is provided for candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and can demonstrate the communication, customer service, and decision-making skills needed for the role.

Duties and Responsibilities

Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center Public Safety Telecommunicators receive and process incoming emergency, non-emergency, and administrative calls and dispatch calls for service to law enforcement, fire agencies, and emergency medical services.

Shift Requirements:

Public Safety Telecommunicators work full-time, a 12.25-hour shift with overtime. The regular schedule requires an average of 57 hours each week. An essential function of this position is the ability to work any shift, therefore, we cannot guarantee assignment to a particular shift. To support the 24/7 operation of the CCCECC, Public Safety Telecommunicators are expected to work nights, weekends, holidays, and all scheduled and unscheduled overtime. This position requires in person attendance. This schedule may be different during classroom and on-the-job training. Employees are expected to report to work as called upon during departmental activation and be prepared to stay during the duration of the event.

Minimum Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds, particularly during stressful or emergency situations.
• Ability to work required scheduled and unscheduled overtime. Public Safety Telecommunicators currently work an average of approximately 57 hours per week.
• Be willing to work the assigned shift, which includes day (5:45am-6pm) or night shift (5:45pm- 6:00am), weekends, and holidays.
• Shift assignments are made after successful completion of required classroom and on-the-job training(OJT).
• Ability to report to work during departmental activations and remain on duty for the duration of the assignment, as required.
• Be 18 years of age or older by date of hire.
• Have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or possess an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
• Demonstrate the ability to type a minimum of 35 adjusted words per minute (AWPM) or 10,500 keystrokes per hour (KPH).
• Must have no felony convictions or current driving suspensions. Misdemeanor convictions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and applicants may be required to provide disposition documentation.
• Pass a background investigation including driving record, employment history, criminal history check, credit check, education, training verification, illegal conduct (drug use, etc.), background interview, and professional reference check.
• Pass a pre-employment physical and psychological evaluation.
• Be able to successfully complete Level IV CJIS Security Awareness Training within 6 months of date of hire and maintain the certification.
