The Police Sergeant supervises personnel of equal or lesser rank, performing varied and detailed duties in planning, assigning, and directing the activities of subordinates in Patrol and the Communications Center. The Sergeant monitors and evaluates the performance of subordinates and provides written documentation meeting the requirements of Babson College’s formal evaluation process. The Sergeant may be assigned as a shift patrol supervisor or to any special assignments. Generally working under the supervision of the Assistant Director/Patrol Lieutenant, a Sergeant shall have immediate control of the personnel under their command and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency, effectiveness, discipline, appearance, and overall conduct to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance with the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the policies, procedures, and regulations of Babson College, consistent with the interests of protecting the lives and property of the members of the Babson College community. In absence of any superior officer, the Sergeant shall assume complete charge of the department until otherwise relieved by a higher authority. WHAT YOU WILL DO Maintains total familiarity with all applicable laws and the policies and procedures of the Public Safety Department and with the rules and regulations of Babson College. Shall assist and instruct personnel under their command in the proper performance of their duties, giving special attention to new officers serving in the department or reassigned to a new shift. Acts as a coach, mentor, and guide in enhancing the skills of subordinates. Responsible for maintaining records, logs, and files; reports in writing to a superior officer any cases of misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty, or violation of Babson College rules and regulations or Public Safety Department policies and procedures on the part of such personnel. Responsible for patrolling the campus regularly in addition to visiting with each person assigned to their shift as often as practical to ensure efficient and effective performance. Reviews and signs written reports submitted by subordinates, accepting responsibility for the completeness, correctness, and accuracy thereof. Responds to or provides back‑up assistance on all potential disturbances and emergency calls. Generally acts as a resource for Officers and Community Service Officers under their immediate supervision and provides guidance to other supervisors as it relates to staff responsibilities as may be assigned. Regularly communicates with other supervisors relative to ongoing issues, trends, behaviors, and performance of subordinates. Identifies the need to follow up written incident reports by coordinating follow up investigations with the initial officer or others. Investigates and documents all accidents in which on‑duty members of the Public Safety Department are involved. Conducts roll calls and periodic inspections of subordinates. Actively involved in carrying out Crime Prevention and Community Engagement programs. Acts as a member of the supervisory and management team of the Public Safety Department and as such is expected to devote themselves to promoting the fulfillment of the mission and values of the Public Safety Department among those they supervise and serve. Assists additional assignments and responsibilities as required. YOUR TEAM WILL INCLUDE Line Authority: Police Officers (2-5) Community Service Officers (1-2) Staff Authority as may be assigned. WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED Associate’s Degree; other degrees acceptable with equivalent experience determined by the Chief of Police or their designee in partnership with Human Resources. A minimum of three years of experience as a full‑time police officer. Graduate of a full‑time police academy certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Council; or a Special State Police Officer Academy offered by the Massachusetts State Police or an approved Part‑Time Intermittent Academy and successful completion of the required MPTC bridge Academy. Basic police firearms instruction and qualification course and/or recent re‑qualification. Hepatitis B vaccination and training in compliance with OSHA regulations; must maintain both throughout time in the position. Thorough understanding of Babson College’s rules and regulations and the Public Safety Department’s policies and procedures. Must be able to maintain control and organize in the event of an emergency and provide support until relieved but a higher authority. Thorough knowledge of modern public safety and police practices in the areas of patrol, communications/dispatching, emergency medical/first responder services, investigation and crime prevention, with a demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of community engagement. Strong communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze emergency and non‑emergency situations and develop effective courses of action. Thorough knowledge of criminal laws, court procedures and alternative administrative practices (Community Based Justice). Demonstrated commitment to the mission of providing law enforcement and security services in a multi‑cultural community that recognizes, values, and utilizes the individual differences and contributions of all people. Knowledge of modern leadership and management practices and problem‑solving methods. Strong familiarity with and knowledge of the operating procedures of various Babson College departments such as Community Standards, Residence Life, IT, and others with whom constant interaction is required. Strong technology skills in the use of the Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), Information Management Corporation’s Records System (IMC), alarm access control and monitoring system (Ccure) as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK Must be willing to work flexible hours, schedules, and overtime assignments. May from time to time be required to perform roles and responsibilities virtually or in‑person including but not limited to, training, special projects, and Community Engagement activities that must be accounted for and appropriately documented as required. This may be determined by the Chief of Police or their designee. Must have had a valid unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License for one year, and maintain throughout employment an insurable (as determined by the College’s insurer’s criteria) or a satisfactory driving record; must successfully complete and pass the College’s vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment; annual or more frequent review of employee’s driving record based on the College insurer’s criteria; and safety training as required by management. LEGAL REQUIREMENTS The Police Sergeant of Public Safety must obtain and retain authority as a special state police officer in accordance with Massachusetts General Law c.22c sec.63. This position must meet the educational and training academy requirements in order to be certified as a Special State Police Officer as well as POST certification MGL 555 CMR 1.0. This position must meet all the requirements of becoming a Special Police Officer in the Town of Wellesley and Needham. Retention of valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Massachusetts Firearm License to Carry Class A is required. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), who by virtue of their College responsibilities and under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, is an individual to which students and employees should report criminal offenses. A CSA shall forward all reports in accordance with the College’s reporting structure so they may be assessed for timely warning, inclusion in the daily crime log and inclusion in annual statistical disclosures. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Appointees to the Police Sergeant of Public Safety position must successfully complete a one‑year probationary period. Permanent and continuing appointment is contingent upon successful completion of such training programs as designated by the Chief of Police or their designee. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Appointees must be in good mental and physical condition, and are subject to psychological evaluations and drug testing, and fitness for duty examinations as may from time to time be prescribed by the Chief of Police or their designee. ADDITIONAL SKILLS YOU MAY HAVE Previous supervisory or OIC experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. This is a non‑exempt position with a starting hourly rate of $45.77 effective 7/1/26.
